I am back to the driver 100.14.19 without any InitialPixmapPlacement or GlyphCache modifications.

On my GF7950 is my Firefox 3.0 fast now.

You mean the legacy driver ? (the old one ?) ..

If so, could you please run the xbenchmark, and send me the results ?

Thx

Firefox with open slashdot comments pages works terribly slow for me. I have 8800GT GPU, the latest stable NVIDIA driver (173.14.09) and I have tried all possible values of GlyphCache and InitialPixmapPlacement.

Worst of all, a rotating Firefox throbbler consumes around 40% of single CPU time. :-( - it is when you wait for a page to be loaded (if server response is slow).

I can feel the improvement on both systems after switch back to the old 100.14.19 driver.

The GF7950 is much faster, no problems here.
The GF8800GTS is faster but slower compared to the GF7950 system, but also here no problems anymore with Firefox 3.

I can scroll without any problems on this page:

OMG! Scrolling on this page takes ages on 7600GT (opera and ff3).

I tried that page in FF3 on Windows XP, it's smooth. Everything is fast and smooth under windows, including TomsHardware.com and digg.com. It's such a shame the linux drivers still provide sub-par performance in 2008.

It is smooth in Firefox 2 indeed. So, who's to blame? Firefox 3, NVIDIA, or both?

There's at least one NVIDIA driver bug that caused poor Firefox scrolling performance that's been fixed already, but not released.

It's the one that makes scrolling e.g. at the bottom of digg.com really slow.

That bug it's only for people who set InitialPixmapPlacement to 2, but it's not the cause of all the problems.

With 0 I get sluggish, but not slow. 1 is sluggish, not slow. 2 is slow, something like 1 fps, 4 is slow, similar to 2.
