i think nvidia/ati needs to rethink thermal levels/heat dissipation in future cards, i would love to see a card reach no higher than 70C on full load

So what does all this mean ? Should those of us with launch 280's RMA them
just to be on the safe side ??? I'm amazed at the number of people with problems..

I think I saw someone already ask this, but I didn't see any answers.

Does anyone think the PCI-E 8 pin adapters could be causing these temp problems? Maybe the adapter is causing too many volts to go to the card or something and overheat?

Are all the people with temp problems using the adapter? Is anyone without temp problems using the adapter?

I was initially using an adapter. I thought that it might be a problem so I purchased another PSU. The same thing happens. The adapters are not what causes this...

Drat. Well thanks for taking one for the team.

I guess I'll return mine and just wait a month or two for this production problems or whatever to iron out. At least then the 4870X2 will also be out, so I'll have a second option or at least a better price on the GTX 280.

No odd issues with mine yet. The sole complaint I have is the fan speeds up and slows down too suddenly IMO. I tend to manually fix it with nTune where I wish.

I only have a 650watt PSU and am using an 6 to 8 pin adapter. I haven't had my overclocking held back one bit. Then again Seasonic makes a quality PSU that puts out very clean power.

Many of the hardware forums have become incredibly vile and petty since the release of the GTX 280. I am going to take a break. The name calling and personal insults are bordering ridiculous.

I don't care what you fellows buy; 9800GTX+, GTX 260, GTX 280, HD 4850 Crossfire, single HD 4870, whatever, I hope you enjoy your purchase.

Peace.

Okay, so as some of you probably know I'm not too pumped about this whole
280 overheating issue.. especially the fact NVIDIA or EVGA hasn't said anything..

Anyway check out what I found..

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/570/3

It looks like on the 680i, and 708i motherboards the fan on the north bridge
is blowing DIRECTLY at the video card, and in the review linked above caused
their 280 to overheat..

I have a 680i and I'm DEFINITELY going to remove the north bridge fan and get
an extra 120-mm fan to keep it cool. THIS IS RIDICULOUS !!!!!!!!

Anyway, hopefully it solves the problem for some people!

The thermal window for the 280 GTX is far too narrow. Even with everything perfect; a case with perfect ventilation, a cool room temperature, and a card with the heatsink installed properly the normal load temperature is 85 degrees, that is only 20 degrees less than the threshold temperature.

But there are so many things that can go wrong (and it doesn't have to be massively wrong just a bit); a case with less than adequate ventilation, a heatsink where there isn't enough or too much thermal paste, a heatsink with uneven pressure, a hot summer day raising the room temperature, or even a small thing like the 680i northbridge fan blowing on the card is enough to tip the scale. This card is in desperate need of a die shrink or a better cooling solution.

Are you running a specific application that overrides HW/driver level fan control? On my card, the fan revs up quite quickly under heavy load, but then it takes forever to spin down.
