Default Re: Will Radeon HD 4870 turn up the heat on the GTX 280?

Well, according to some at Rage3d who already have the card and using the latest drivers, those results are accurate,so we really may be looking at an HD4870 going toe to toe with the GTX260 card.

Given that the HD4870 will retail for 300$ and the GTX280 ends up being only 15% faster and costs 650$,i just don't see many of these selling to be quite honest....Even Nvidia's own product line at lower budgets shot the GTX280's chances to hell if you already own an SLI chipset with all the options available:

1:8800GT's in SLI.(now 300$ for 2 cards)
2:8800GTS in SLI.(prices are all over the place)
3:9800GTX's in SLI(now 400$)
4:9800GTX+ in SLI(460$)
5:9800GX2 for non SLI users(480$)

All of the above combinations are either only a hair below the GTX280's overall performance(8800GT SLI),or can even beat a single GTX280 by a fair margin(9800GTX+ in SLI),and still cost anywhere from 180$ less to 350$ less,so why choose a GTX280 again?

Its for people who want a complete smooth gaming experience without the stuttering and other issues from SLI.

Also the GTX 280 is for people who wish to game at high res with lots of AA and AF, a situation that would make any of your above SLI solutions fall flat on their faces due to the much smaller bus and less ram.

Really, then why isn't a GTX280 beating a 9800GX2 or any other SLI combination i've mentioned in the recent GTX280 reviews made last week, except in the odd case here and there, and those SLI setups to have their variable performance scaling issues to deal with.

I know some do notice that microstuttering, and even then it only seems to happen in a few cases, but there's still a seriously large price difference, and if i owned an SLI capable chipset,i'd go for a 9800GTX+ SLI setup given that it can be quite a bit faster than the 9800GX2,wich the 280GTX can't beat as it is,and still 200$ cheaper as an extra bonus.

Bottom line if the competition is close maybe both teams will fine tune the hell out of the drivers, I hope. I just want 1 badass card @ 1680x1050 so nothing drops below 60fps.

I would buy 4870X2 if it really has a 1GB shared frame buffer which is more superior than dual 4870 CF.

You have no clue as to what you are talking about and are completely missing the point by buying into the bs from the reviews which do nothing but show you the peak FPS rather than the average FPS and Min FPS. This is where the GTX 280 is miles and miles ahead of any SLI solution, a few guys here that have upgraded from the GX2 will gladly tell you what a better and much smoother gaming experience is provided to them by the GTX 280 over the GX2.

Let us not forget as well that the GTX 280 is on launch drivers while the GX2 on the other hand is on drivers that have had time to mature and optimize.

Also you are neglecting to acknowledge the fact that the GTX 280 has a major advantage over the GX2 with its much broader memory bus and more usable ram. Both of these factors will help the GTX 280 in high res situations with lots of AA and AF applied. Here is an example of what happens when the GX2 runs out of memory-

I do agree that the GTX 280 is overpriced but I am not to blind to see the obvious advantages that the GTX 280 has over any current G92 sli setup and you are only fooling yourself if you really think that the GX2 is the better card.

GX2 sucks big. It may have higher average FPS, but min FPS and FPS fluctuation is terrible. The GTX280 is all about smoothness.

Maybe so,but i'm just going by the numbers here, and there is that Hard OCP GTX review that records minimum/average and peak FPS results and they don't look hugely better than the GX2,here's the link to their review...

Err,you do realise that the 9800GX2 was released only 3 months ago,so how refined can the drivers be for them anyhow?

I don't know about you,but the minimum frame rate in that very chart with regards to the GTX280 doesn't look too hot to me,despite having a 512 bit memory bus and 1 GB of ram.

Just look at that Hard OCP review and let me know....

I think pizza is more on about the micro stuttering issues and some non-scaling performance of GX2 or even SLI or CF systems

Precisely. I wish ALL these reviewers would show min fps but it seems like a bit too much extra effort for them.
