it really wouldn't suprise me if nvidia is working on GX2 version of GT200(b)

Assuming they can make an august release for the GT200b,It'll have to be alot faster than the current GT200 to be able to compete with the HD4870 X2....I'd say 30~40% faster to be on the safe side.

Who is this Rob douchebag?

Anyhow I'm half tempted to sell my 8800GTX which has been a great card to a friend of mine for like $140. Then put the money towards a 4870. Impressive card it seems and I want to support ATI to keep them in the game. Now they finally have something coming out worth owning.

The GTX280 is the fastest single chip card available ,even if by a tiny margin,so I am glad I bought what I did.I tried the dual chip method with the 9750GX2 and I will be avoiding those like I avoid Nvidia motherboard chipsets.Sure I am not to happy about paying over twice as much but I can certainally say I got what I wanted.

It's pretty much a sure thing that Nvidia will release one,the thing is that even at 55nm,it still yeilds a die that's about 400mm^,so still quite large and fairly expensive to make, and there's the extra complexity in terms of PCB design given the amount of pins used on the GPU package and traces needed on that same PCB given the 512 bit bus needed for each GPU.

Add the 1 GB GDDR 3 memory for each GPU in there, and the cooling and power requirements of feeding 2x 400mm^ dies packing 1.4 billion transistors each,2 GB of ram total, and use a cooler no bigger than the one used in the 9800GX2 so users can actually fit that thing in their cases..[wink]

Then there's the cost of the thing, since it'll be more expensive to make than the 9800GX2 for sure,so quite a lot of challenges to tackle..

I just glad I waited this time instead of going and getting a new card when it comes out .The 4870x2 looks like it will be a winner .

So you'll swap that GTX280 of yours for the updated GT200B version as soon as it's released?

I would like to see a GT200b on steroids, like the 7800GTX512 or the 7900GTX were. My wishes are on a 55nm GT200 with 512bit & GDDR5.

nVidia is going to have a harsh battle vs ATi this time.

are you skipping GT200 for now?

I'm not sure if the current memory controler in the GT200 supports GDDR 5 though, but even then, using a 512 bit bus and GDDR 5 is beyond overkill, and the card would have more memory bandwith than the core could use (250GB/sec +),Not to mention that GDDR5 memory production is still ramping up and carries a premium over GDDR3.

A higher clocked 55nm version, running at 750 to 800Mhz,using the same power as the current version and clocking it's GDDR 3 memory as fast as it can, would likely make the fight a lot closer realtive to the HD4870 X2,and it's something that Nvidia can do in the next few months.

Well according to the rumors, the 4870X2 won't be all that similar to the previous sandwich-cards, so it's not really fair to compare it to previous generations(until we have more information that is).

The bottom line is that ATi is offering gamers more FPS for their money, and that is really what matters(and also better functionality).

I'm also betting that ATi is going to release a refresh card with higher clocks and the locked stream processors opened, somewhere down the line.

Remember that the ATi cards have a lot more to gain from overclocking than nvidia's offerings due to their reliance on raw power of the stream processors.
