Particleman, what's your room temp? It's hot where I live but it's only 82 degrees F today yet both my EVGA 280 SSCs go over 100 degrees C when I tested Furmark seperately. There are some artifacts in Mass Effect when I let the card go to 90 degrees or above. My biggest problem is that the 2 cards have serial numbers in sequence which means that they could both be defective goods from the same lousy factory.

No extra cooling is needed. You can have the air conditioning unit blowing on the card and it would still overheat. Some cards are problematic, it's that simple. People that have exchanged their cards for working ones report 35c of difference. If there was no shutdown from excessive heat, there would be even more difference...

Watercooling is the anwer guys. Yes it's more expensive but definitely worth the investment. Plus you don't need as many fans which increases noise, no dust build up, and it'll open up more slots on the motherboard to install more add in cards. You don't have to constantly buy new parts. The radiator, fans, reservoir and pump you can always reuse on new parts. Obviously you would have to buy new waterblocks for the cpu and graphic cards whenever you upgrade. But that's typically about $150, depending from what provider you get from. I always go with DD. No leaks. Great blocks. ($50 usually for the cpu and $100 for the graphics card). Definitely worth it if you live in a hot climate.

DD Tieton block

If you're gonna spend $650 for a video card, what's another $150? Plus you can overclock your card much higher than with stock cooling. Just don't throw away the stock cooler. Keep it if you need to return the card later for warranty service.

who do people have so much difficulty grasping the fact that a certain percentage of gtx280 are broken and that no amount of cooling will fix them!

I don't know what to tell you guys. I fired up futuremark twice, temp doesn't go over 72C.

I removed window 140mm fan though.

WTF IS GOING HERE....

It's nothing to do with airflow, when mine hit 105C when I first bought the card the case was open and the room was cool, since then it's been fine though, running much cooler in a closed case with higher ambient temps.

It's more likely the prolblem just solved itself, like it did with me.
