Perhaps an atempt to simulate higher resolution textures. That or perhaps more pronounced mapping.

They didn't. I ran the original through the Gimp and came up with something pretty close to what they got. Just desaturate it, decrease the brightness, and apply an unsharp mask and you get essentially the same thing. They did a few other things, but I think the unsharp mask is what makes people think it looks better, and that can't be done in real-time so it's really cheating just like when game companies do post-processing on their screenshots.

Yeah, I'm wondering if they applied a little bit of HDR to theirs because the whole thing looks a little softer and the bridge looks like it has a bit of glow to me. Or I may have just been too heavy-handed with the sharpening.

Actually, come to think of it I should have run the original through the sharpening filter and posted that for comparison. I already spent too much time doing the first one though so in the interest of keeping my job I think I'll leave that to someone else.

Blizzard didnt make that "adjusted" image, just to clarify.
But you can get pretty close to that with just post effects, is what Im saying. (additional rain has also been added I notice, EDIT: and some attempt to put in shadow under the corpse /EDIT)
Not so sure about the sharpening effect of Unsharpen mask, but Im fairly sure you CAN do some sharpeing im postprocessing with resonable performance, sure I´ve seen that as a effect in some game somewhere.

Which shows what you CAN do with postprocessing, and that they can still redirect the game in a darker direction if they want, I do however belive they will stick with the style its using now.
