As about 280 GTX it is the clear winner when comes to performance (with and without AA)
The GTX280 is clearly superior in speed from the 4870 in almost every test i have seen

The people that say 4870 is faster from GTX280 are fanboys

When you post some hand picked benches at least you should link the source so we can see the whole story.

Furthermore this thread is about "HD 4870 vs GTX 260" and you guys keep bringing up GTX 280.

GTX 280 is not even closely in the same price range, we sure have to wait for the HD 4870x2 to compare against it.

I didn't noticed anybody claiming that HD 4870 is faster than GTX 280, most would just say it is much better deal, one off the reason i bought one.

Ahem.. 2xAA and 4xAA isn't really stressing these cards. Show some benchmarks of 8xAA and those graphs will look a lot different. The GTX280 is faster than the 4870, no doubt about that, but the 4870 still gives it a run for its money...

anything higher then AA4x at 2560x1600 and limits comes, but thats problem for minimum people who got 30".

Well the price is still up there on the cards....if nvidia were to bring it down then it might be a loss...i would also imagine alot of retailers would also be in QQ -.-...The ATi card is cheap and delivers...while the nvidia gtx 280 is expensive..but is aimed for those who have expensive big screens..in which case...cost is negated...but for many people out there that want to get good performance at a decent resolution...without having to give up a kidney...then the 4870 is better a choice....

Fanbois go wild. MOST review clearly show the 280 is the best single chip out there and you couldn't make me use CCC or an x2 at this time.
That said, 4870 is a big improvement for ATI and finally some real competition which will be GREAT for consumer.The next 12 months should see some monster cards coming from both companies.

Total performance @ high res with the GTX 260 in SLi used as a baseline-



Anyone that's read more than one review knows the HD 4870 wins games like Assassin's Creed, Grid, and Oblivion well. It wins Bioshock in some reviews and can not do AA in that title currently, unlike nVidia cards.

It loses to a stock GTX 260 in: AoC, Crysis, Lost Planet, WiC, CoH, Jericho, Graw2, Gothic 3, PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, Frontlines: Fuel of War, SupCom, and Prey, to name a few. The reviews are mixed.

Anyone can cherry pick a few benches, which I am demonstrating below , and it's not hard to tell who's a fan of what by what they select.

What's up with GRAW2 performance?



Another thing I noticed is when the GTX 260 loses @ 1920x in GRID and Assassins Creed it's still putting up very playable FPS. The same can not be said for the HD 4870 when it loses @ the same res in Lost Planet-



Another neat thing about the HD 4870 is currently you can cook your breakfast on it.



I'll put my bet on an overclocked GTX 260 winning vs an overclocked HD 4870 in the majority of games. Sure the HD 4870 has a few great wins, and folks seem to be focusing solely on those. Some benches are definitely contested depending on the site you believe.

The bottom line is they are both good buys right now and you wouldn't go wrong having either card in your rig.
