HD 4870 vs GTX 260

I tell you guys what, I just came from a 9800GTX that I had overclocked to 850core 2100shaders and 2500mem which I thought was fast until I got my HD 4870.

I have that sucker running at 860mhz core and 4400mhz mem thanks to the new AMD GPU OC tool!

AA hardly even phases this card and Oblivion at 1680X1050 with 8XAA and Supersampling turned on all while running 55+FPS in the heavy foilage is a site to behold!

All of my other games haul ass too! Jericho, Stalker, ME, HLEP2 Bioshock etc

Dont be so sure of that, I have my HD 4870 running at 860mhz and mem at 4400mhz right now at stock VC. I still do not know how high it will go yet and games are just flying!

Also When ATI tool catches up it will be possible to increase the VC through software, something nvidia has never done.



Another thing worth noting is the fact that the HD 4870 does not have proper drivers yet as its using drivers that were not even intended for the card, just wait until actual 4870 drivers come out, I expect a nice performance jump.

Everything is just ridiculously priced, except for graphics cards. The Q9775 is 1500$, which is 1000$ too much, and PSUs cost less than 5$ to make. Not to even mention ddr3...

You're the first one I've heard of running those clocks. That's an impressive OC.

Care to share your Vantage GPU score @ that setting?

If you don't own WiC and the mood strikes you, perhaps you could download the demo and run the built in bench at very high quality stock and overclocked.

I am definitely curious about how much of a boost it would get moving from stock to your OC.

Hey thanks, I am actually stable at 890core now! Im gonna stop for now until I get an aftermarket cooler.

As for Vantage I do not know anything about that, what is it?

I gotta head down stairs for a bit to eat supper and I will come back up in a minute to check on this thread.

You've got a golden card there. I was poking around Guru3d and saw one fellow that got glitches @ 820 and another that had made 840 stable. You're the only 860-890 I've seen.

Vantage is a Futuremark bench, their latest. You have to pay to get the full version though. If you don't own it, no worries.

Just try the WiC bench built into the game demo if the mood strikes you. Again, I am interested in seeing the FPS scaling from stock to OC.

And? There are a lot of people who own an original XBox 360, and have never had problems. Doesn't mean there isn't a mass problem with it.

While the issues with nForce aren't nearly as bad as the 360, it's been documents that nForce has issues. nForce 2 was friggin brilliant, and 3 was excellent as well. nForce 4 was utterly horrible out of the box.

I own an nForce 4 ultra, nForce 4 SLI, and nForce 650i Ultra. The north/southbridge fan on both NF4s died...repeatedly. The Ultra has become very unstable, while the SLI has been RMA'ed. The 650 doesn't like driver updates and causes BSOD/reboot cycles if you try to update the driver, ut is otherwise stable...for now.

It's luck of the draw. You've had excellent luck, I have not, but the issues with nForce are well documented.

Lash, I think you really jumped the gun on this one. The 4870 doesn't even have a driver for it out yet; it's using the latest 3870 driver to run on. The Catalyst limits the overclock to 790, and the two 3rd party tools most commonly used to overclock ATI cards with (Riva Tuner, ATi Tool) don't have a profile for it yet. Not only that, but you have it running on an unofficial driver (3870 driver) that's keeping the fan speed locked at 23% or less. So of course you won't see many guys overclocking it right now.

You and I both know that ATI's cards have overclocked like mad in the past. There's no reason to think they won't this time when the 3rd party tools are modified to include it in the profile. Just wait until Wizzard gets his ATi Tool updated for the 4800 series and allows a V-core bump. You'll see guys at over 900 on the core like I had my 2900XT at.

You also say that the 260 is a better overall performer. Well show me a single game where the 260 cranks out performance equal to or better as GTX280. You won't find one, whereas you'll find the 4870 doing it on many occasions.

Bottom line is that there are 4 great graphics cards on the market right now between the GTX280, 260, HD4870 and 4850. Many of you need to be happy about what you have instead of feeling so threatened by the competition.

I agree nForce chipsets have been going backwards, (and my brothers NF4 chipset fan died as well) you cannot blame THAT aspect on anyone but the company that chooses to use those crappy loud fans on their motherboard.

I agree, its good to have ATI back in the game so we can all have a few choices with great prices!

The card has to be as cool as possible, I too was getting artifacts at 850 but it was due to temps, as soon as I knocked out that issue I did not see a voltage limitation until I hit 900mhz on the core. All I can say is that when Wizzard gets ATI tool up and running for this card look out!
