Ah but the point you miss is that if you can't tell the difference between the cards in gameplay, we get down to things like angle dependent AF, inferior transparency AA, no PhysX, no CUDA, less RAM, worse warranties, no step up program, worse service.

The 4870 just isn't a "no brainer" since NVIDIA lowered the price on the GTX260. A buyer might put up with the above for $100 less, but for the same price? For what? To get unnoticeable FPS differences and DX10.1?

Like I said, proving the 4870 is "better" than the GTX260 because it compares to the 280 in a handful of benches and the 260 doesn't is sort of whack.


I guess at the end of the day all we can say is for the last 19 months all ATi's techs can do is come up with second best tech, probably because they have budget constraints given AMDs ginormous debt load and consecutive losses in preceding quarters.

I had bought HD4870's this weekand and a Gigabyte X48 CF mobo, and trust me, GTX280 SLi is way, WAAAAY faster in COD4 and in GRID, the 2 games that the ATi's should be blazingly fast in. I tested the CF setup very thoroughly.

Well, I found out the Radeon Red cards actually sucked in these games comparing to 2 GTX280's in SLi.

Stuttering, framedrops, a lot of heat coming out of the back of the card idle, a frying hot PCB and memory. Over 100C in CF. Bad IQ. Very noisy at only 35% fanspeed, and 35% fanspeed is not enough to cool the cards properly, so I think these cards have to be clocked down in 3D to be cooler. 8x AA in GRID, HL2 (ep 1, 2) and COD4 is not even playable @ 1920x1200.

Well, I think (actually tested it myself) the radeon HD4870 sucks! I tried 8.7 beta and 8.6 hotfix, and I tested if Crossfire was working, and it was, but it was a lot, a lot slower than GTX280 SLi. I cannot believe 2 GTX260's in SLi are slower than 2 HD4870's in CF. No way.

The image quality of the ATi's was bad too. (Moving AA textures in GRID and shimmering in HL2) nVidia's GT200 series give a lot better IQ. AF and AA is much much better on the nVidia cards.

I'll never buy an ATi card again in my whole life. This was the second time I tried it, I owned a HD3870X2 too, but I sold them all after 3 days of gaming.

Conclusion: Dont believe reviewers... Test it yourself.

That's what i was trying to say here. HD4000 series sucks compared to GTXs and to actually know that you have to try it yourself. Those review tests are useless.

This is an nV forum. If they dont like it, they should go to Rage3Dor some fansite like that, and hype each other up. I think the HD4870 is overhyped.

My testing even concluded that 2 overclocked 9800GTX cards where almost as fast as 2 HD4870's in CF. And thats no lie.

Well I call this bull. As much as I hate the 2nd fanboy, I have upgraded from 8800GT to a 4780. Why would I bother with SLI or XFire when this card already runs COD4 at max with 4AA16AF at 1920 - smooooooth as butter? Also, image quality for me in excellent. I don't have any of the problems that you have, and at 30% my card idles at 44 and loads at about 60-70. I would say that is not bad (replacing the stock cooler soon). Also, I am using the normal 8.6 (maybe the normal 8.6 on amd's website includes the hotfix, dunno). All in all I am VERY please with this card, especially for the price it's going for.

Unless you are just pissed at rad red, in which case I don't know what to say (except for go away fanboys of the netz).

I tested it at COD4 at those settings with a single card, and I had a lot of framedrops to 40- 45FPS with the single card with VSYNC ON and of.

I find that not playable @ 1920x1200. everything below 55 FPS is/feels kinda laggy to me. Framedrops suck.

Its certainly faster than a 8800GT, but a 9800GTX OC comes close to a HD4870 imho.

I do think the HD4870 is "a bit" overhyped. OK, it costs a lot less than a GTX280, but the gameplay on a 280 is a lot better than on a HD4870. Higher minimum framerates. Less drops. Better @ very high settings. 512MB vidmem is not cutting it no more.

with same settings on my older setup 8800ULtra i got less than 20fps all maxed so this card is a really good card as i had 2 G80´s well i don´t care if you label me as a freaking fanboy wich i ain´t
