Used to have ~15s with 100 in gtkperf, now it's down to 7.xx! Firefox feels faster too. (note: I'm using initialpixmap=2 and glyphcache=1)
Where exactly do you place those settings?

Open up a terminal, type:

Code:
nvidia-settings -a glyphcache=1 -a initialpixmap=2

Thanks! That will require X server restart right?

Also, I get

ERROR: Error parsing assignment 'glyphcache=1' (Unrecognized attribute name).

Sorry,

Code:
nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1
You need to be running the latest beta driver...

Ahh ok, I'll just uninstall my distro's packages and install straight from the nvidia site.

Oh, and if you restart the X server after running the command, you lose the changes.

Then how do I keep those changes?

Put them in your DE / WMs autostart or session management.

Thanks. At the moment, I'm trying to figure out how to install the 177 Beta drivers on Linux Mint.

Don't, except you have one of the newly supported cards.
(Which, according to what I read, you haven't)

Everything else works with latest stable.

There is a sticky on how to install those, just follow the ones
of the base distribution of mint.

But there's an improvement with the 177 beta I hear.

8600GT, terrible performance on 2d or Compiz/Beryl. I can see the redraws as I drag or scroll. This is regardless of distro (Ubuntu down to PuppyLinux). Tried many different drivers and now use VESA as its faster 2D rendering than NVidias drivers.

Same card in Windows is flawless. 3D gaming is fine in both Linux and Windows.
