So I decided to run Mass Effect on my old Pentium 4 PC w/ 6800 GT. I monitored the temperatures through Rivatuner, and during the game, the temps rose as high as 97C... I'm extremely worried now. It's even got a Zalman cooler on it w/ the fan running on high. I guess I'll just continue to run the system until the video card finally decides to croak. I don't know what else to do. There's just too much heat circulating in the system I guess.

The stock cooler does a better job than that. You might want to remove the cooler and reattach it. Doesn't make a lot of sense to just burn it up if you know it's going to overheat.

It's not going to make a difference. There just isn't enough airflow in the case. The room is also fairly warm. The card idles around 62-66 depending on the conditions.

You should definitely take that 6800 out and take the cover off the heatsink for a thorough cleaning. They used to get dust clogged inside the heatsink pretty often. 3 months after I bought mine it was locking up and running at 85C. I cleaned some dust bunnies out of the heatsink and the temps dropped significantly. Never had another problem with it.
No sense in just killing it. If you're going to do that, send it to me...

I Just rebuilt a machine with some parts I had laying around and installed my Evga 6800GT to it.
I had an MSI 865P neo 2 with a Intel Northwood 2.8 cpu and that card still runs strong. When I saw this post I thought what the heck. I set the machine up with Win XP SP 1a to run some of my older games. I call it my nostalgia pc. ![]() |

I have a few older games I play and they run a bit easier on my nostalgia machine than on my Vista 64 machine. My daughter had a Dell E771a monitor that I am using for this older machine. It is very clear and crisp. I didn't mean to steal the original OP's post. I put a Zalman after market cooler on my 6800GT maybe that would help keep your 6800GT going for a bit longer.

My offer still stands Madpistol. If you're just going to run the card until its dead, I have a system that could definitely use a good AGP 6 series card if you want to get rid of it cheap.
