If they allow you to return the card and get the money, you are one lucky man, and you can recover from the 'early adopter tax'. That card was heavily overpriced when it was released

TigerDirect can be really strict when it comes to returning opened products. Fortunately eVGA stuff is not on that list. It can be returned at any time within 30 days for a full refund, regardless of whether it was open or not.

but if i can grab GTX 280 for about 419 (449 - 30 rebate), that card will be more then enough. and still save $130 compared to 4870x2.

Nobody really knows what the MSRP on HD 4870x2 is going to be.
Many rumors suggest this pricing: $499.00 1GB / $549.00 2GB. The rumors started when GTX 280 price was $650, now i believe the MSRP for the same card is $499 not counting the special sale prices, The point is who knows if AMD might not rethink the strategy based on the above. Looks to me if AMD has plenty off the cards we might see some price wars. Even with recent NVIDIA problems it's still in much better financial position than AMD but AMD manufacturing cost is much lover on the above cards. So the question is, can NVIDiA afford price war and still make money? EDIT The other question is, does AMD need to go in price war? The HD 4870 is still selling at the introduction price of about $300 and selling well.

HD4870X2 will always depend on frequent drivers update. There will be always month of delay before ATI updates their drivers for new game, or maybe even two months to catch up with GTX280.
Knowing ATI, their drivers and CCC...don't think it's worth it. SLI scales and runs better, and you can always create new profile for your new game which for the most part gives you nice boost.

Now ATI has new drivers at least every month and from the real users there is no more complains than on the NVIDIA drivers.

The other argument is the CCC sux argument. They forget how NV went from the old control panel to the new one also. Thanks NV for removing the overclocking and temperature readings from their new driver sets. The button now sends you to download Ntune, which I would be fine with but for some reason my Nforce 650i board isn't compatible! LOL! The only bad thing about CCC is poor game profile implementation. ATT does a better job at it, kinda like Nhancer.
