More Nvidia price reductions: GTX 280 @$449!!!

It looks like AMD keeps putting the heat on Nvidia. The GTX 280 will soon go for $449, the GTX 260 will stay at $299, and the 9800 GTX+ will go for $199.

Here are the contestants:

GeForce GTX 280 vs. Radeon HD 4870 X2

GeForce GTX 260 vs. Radeon HD 4870

GeForce 9800 GTX+ vs. Radeon HD 4850


The GTX 280 will lose to the HD 4870 X2 in almost every case except Crysis. However, the GTX 280 will be priced about $100 lower. Let's see what Nvidia does if AMD can get the 4870X2 to launch at $499! We may see that GTX 280 going for $399 very soon!!

The GTX 260 vs. the HD 4870 is a toss up with each winning in different games and settings.

The 9800 GTX+ vs. the HD 4850 is also a close call, but I'd give the overall nod to the HD 4850.


This price war is definitely welcome for us gamers. However, it will definitely impact the bottom line of both companies, possibly causing AMD to go out of business. Still, let's enjoy these prices while we can!

I still see the HD 4870 selling at the same introduction price of about $300 and selling well.
So at least for now no need for price war there.
Also since NVIDIA manufacturing cost on the 200 series is much higher I wonder how much more they can reduce the price and still make money.

Why would any of this cause AMD/ATI to go out of business? They already have the price/performance wrapped up in the 4870, and at 4870x2 launch they have the fastest graphcs card on the market.

Both of those are attractive to the masses and will draw lots of revenue.

2) A pretty good indication for all big upcoming known & unknown titles. (Alan Wake , Porject Offset .. etc)

Yeah, I feel the same. My overclocked 8800GTX runs everything just fine. Actually, since I game on my HDTV at 1366x768 I can even run Crysis DX10 all VH, 0xAA, 0xAF with my GTX. I've decided against upgrading until something comes out that's more demanding than VH Crysis at the resolution I can play it at.

The thing is, everyone talks about buying cards for the future, but half of the people here buy the latest and greatest once a year.

I'm hoping that upcoming games run better than Crysis. Surely it's possible.

Ever since I completed it for the second time (one run on high, and one run tweaked to Very High), I haven't even touched it. In fact, I have no desire to see this game run better either... I just like playing games. My system plays them well, and that's all I need.

Also, if I ever get the money to get a new video card, I will probably give my money to ATI this time around. They've earned it.

The price war will definitely affect Nvidia more than AMD. Still, AMD's stock has also been tanking lately. Intel has really put a hurt on AMD with the Core2 CPU.
