It sounds like the core may not have good contact with the heat spreader. No direct knowledge; that's just what it sounds like.
How does this kind of crap make it out of quality control in the first place, though?

I doubt there’s anything actually wrong with the cards, it's most likely a compatibly issue your motherboard/drivers or even the PSU as the chance of getting two in a row that are faulty is too minuscule to even consider to be honest.

Funny thing is how ATI is catching heat (heh) for the high idle temps. Looks like ATI won the cooler design battle of the current generation's war, NVIDIA winning the idle power consumption.

Here's some reading to help you out. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=114925 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=114925 Yes, READ the threads here. There are people who have gotten two or three of four bad cards. I'd go on & on, but really, there's no need to. |

Okay I have a new update for you guys. I got the 5th eVGA GTX 280 and I must say I found a keeper. Today is a particularly hot day, much warmer than the other days when I tested the other cards. Even so, after 30 minutes of Furmark, temps were 88-90C and the fan was set on auto and spinning at 92% at those temperatures. Crysis was running at 76-79C at 82% fan speed. Good thing is I bought this card for $380 brand new from a friend. Now I just have to go return my bad card.
Compatibility issues? I think not. Northbridge/Southbridge fan blowing directly at the video card? Nope. What the heck is going on? I don't know. Quote:
