Great, I guess you need a list of things to be improved ... Oh no, you have your own ;-)

I dream of an extended XvMC...

As you can see, without setting InitialPixmap the performance are a bit awfull, but with this setting the whole stuff run smoothly. Of course, InitialPixmap consumme more CPU than without ...

They claim this new version fix the Xrender lag, so I decided to run it toward my previous bench results.
No thay said that the fixes are NOT in this release, but will be in future 177.* and 180.* drivers.
Please read the post you linked too....

Yep, I fixed the post. Anyway, the current version improve a lot the user experience with firefox.

I guess I will have to re-run the bench one more time

I'm planning to buy a new rig about a month from now, and thinking of an nVIDIA graphics card. The 9800GT based cards are in a good pricerange, and I'm wondering if this chip is supported by this driver? The "driver chooser" says so, but not the supported devices list?

Also, I can't find any beta driver for this chip? Are there none, or just very well hidden?

Think I have to write this below like a disclaimer!
I am aware of the performance issues with the 8xxx/9xxx cards, there I looked for a beta driver, and also wondering if one may see progress in the next month

i have looked at ATI/AMD cards as well, but there seems to be issues in that camp to, and I cant really grasp what the different drivers support(radeon/radeonhd/fglrx), so I THINK nVIDIA is the right choise, I have had no problems what so ever in past with my GF 7600GT AGP card, and also an older card, can't recollect the model right now tho

@slanbarn

The performance of the 9800GT isn't bad under linux (but havent tried KDE4) but one thing I can say is if you get a Gigabyte 9800GT your fan will be stuck at 100% all the time.
