What we need is dual-core graphics cards! I have a feeling that will be the next "big thing"

Graphics cards have been multicore for ages, well before CPUs. They are already specialized processors that handle a ton of calculations in parrallel. The reason companies go "multi-chip" is because with a massive chip all it takes is one defect to make the entire chip defective and if it is a big chip it wastes a larger portion of a wafer. But if the same die area is used for two chips, one defect only results in one defective chip. What is needed is better abstraction of "multi-chip" solutions to software and better multi-chip communications.

SLI vs. Crossfire, Single-Chip vs. SLI/Crossfire, 280 vs 4870x2

Can't we all just get along?

Last I heard, for the GTX 280 it is going to be upped to 648 on the core with a 1620 shader clock. That will certainly help.

GTX 260 SLi or a card based on it, isn't beating the X2 unless it's released at the above clocks or greater. IMO something like 675-690 with a 1620 shader clock would make it very close, if not give them the win.

I've been up to 1580 on the shaders with this card @ a high core clock and it did help quite a bit.

the x2 sucks even if it is faster, b/c it's hotter and more expensive, and some people are not indifferent to filtering quality and even find it to be inferior (with ati), myself included.

Hahaha.

They tested Crysis (almost one of the worst scaling engines going). 4870x2 is not really a 1680x1050 card. Needs 1920x1200 and up to really shine.

I totally agree. If I wanted more power at 1680x1050 and I had more than $300 to spend, I would opt for the GTX280. Faster than the 4870 and it's $140 cheaper than the X2. I know I would not really appreciate the 4870X2 at 1680x1050. It's not that it's not worth it but realistically it is not for 22" screen users. It's for the 24" and up crowd.

For smooth game play (nearly always over 60fps) in all but Crysis, I think it goes something like this...

19" - 1280x1024 = 9600GT, 3870, 8800GT/GTS's ($100 - $200)
22" - 1680x1050 = 9800GTX, 4850, GTX200's, 4870 ($200 - $400)
24" and up - GTX200 SLI and 4870X2. ($500 - $800)

Reviews should really point out where the $500 and up solutions shine. Not this 1680x1050 and lower stuff.

What Can Nvidia to win back performance leadership...
they thought that GT200b would be enough to beat ATi, and they were planing to release GTX260+ and GTX280+. But know when they already tested it, they understand that GTX260+ won't beat 50X2 and GTX280+ won't beat 70X2.
What they have left to improve in their video card's...
They will use GDDR5 memory, or introduce GTX280GX2...
if they will go with GDDR5 memory, I's very likely that they make a new series out of it (GTX300).
so as I have said above, we can also see GX2 version. even Bryan Del Rizzo mentioned it:
To some people maybe, but it took two of their GPUs to beat one of ours. We have had dual GPU cards and it's feasible that it may happen again."

Future will tell....
