I just upgraded to the Silverstone Zeus 1200w, and the screeching has gone away. I don't know why exactly, I'd assume it would be the quality of the components involved, as the Zeus is a advertised as a "workstation" grade power supply, unlike my old Silverstone Strider 850w which was simply labeled "silent". I don't think it's a rail issue, this new PSU has the ability to switch between multi and single rail configurations, but currently I'm still on multi-rail with 6x16A.

The Strider models are not all that great a brand. The Zeus is a far better line made with higher quality components--among the best in the market.

Hi there. I had same prowith GTX 280. And indeed it is problem with the power supplies (i heard those noises also in my psu). And i thinkt that ive found a solution on some polish forum. Try to turn on the VSync in games and Triple buffering. It helped me. Its because high end cards your card will generate only that amount of fps that your lcd can show. Otherwise it wil generate as much as it possible (f.e. in Crysis can reach even 5000fps - that what i have read) and to generate such many fps need many watts. So that why it make so many noise. I hope that will help you as well. Good luck lads

This is true. The screeching is louder the higher the frame rate. I turn Vsync on whenever I can with the 280, makes the screeching go away by keeping the frame rate at 60fps...

It's coming from the cards... It's a bit hard to record without proper equipment...

As you can see it's not uncommon...

Do this test, open a window, like IE in Vista (with Aero on) or an Explorer window, make it large and resize it over and over. See if you hear the screeching. Mine did that until I swapped PSU's on a 8800GTX.

Mine only seems to screech/whine when I run ATITool. The 3D window and artifact scanner cause my psu to whine like a lil girl. At first i thought it was the card that was making the noise but after reading through this thread I pulled the side panel off the case and stuck my ear up to it and it was deffinitely the psu. This is it's a half decent psu ( i thought it was anyways). Its a Coolermaster pro 750w. So my question is what is making the noise and is it problem that needs to be addressed or not? Do i need a larger psu or is this one adequate?

System specs:
Asus Max Form
Q6700 @ 3.4
2x1 gig dblsided Ballistix 8500 @ 1133
EVGA GTX260 SC @ 666/1458/2214
WD250 HDD
SG80 HDD
Coolermaster pro 750w
Rocketfish case Lian-Li rebadge (too cheap to pass up)

I am also experiencing this very annoying problem with my XFX GTX 280.

Im using a Cooler Master Real Power M 700W, im guessing the PSU could be to blame?

Seeing the number of people that are experiencing this issue, I don't think it's damaging to the card. A new PSU fixed the problem for me but I bought it for other reasons and did not expect it to help in that respect.

The PSU switch works in certain cases, and doesn't in others, regardless of wattage. I still think it has to do with how the PSU was made - that is you're probably more likely to fix it with a higher priced unit designed for higher loads.

But still at this point it seems to be hit or miss, so If you're in the market for a new PSU, then fixing the screeching could be an added benefit but I wouldn't throw down $200-$300 just because of it.
