Unhappy 8800 GTX, Poor Performance, Anarchy Online

Hey,

I've been trying to get Anarchy Online working under Debian AMD64. I'm having to boot to Windows to play it, and frankly I don't want to. I do all my best work under Linux.

I was originally having serious issues with the client and its textures. The solution was to disable Vertex Shaders. Examples of the issue are here and here. This is now resolved, but I'm still receiving issues (explained below) and furthermore, I'm baffled as to why I had to disable Vertex Shaders in the first place.

So, using Cedega, I start the Anarchy Online client. Once it's loaded, the game is VERY laggy -- movement is slow, mouse cursor is very slow, etc - and it is completely unplayable. My computer is top-end, everything new, so I'm a bit perplexed about all this. Anarchy Online itself is certainly not GPU intensive and it runs fine under Windows. Can anyone help me?

My system stats are:
Proc.: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR II
Video Card: Gainward 8800 GTX 768MB
Kernel: 2.6.24-1-amd64 (straight from apt)
Driver version: nvidia-kernel-2.6.24-1-amd64, 169.09-1+2.6.24-2

My glxinfo output is available here.

I'd appreciate any assistance, solutions or suggestions as I'd like to be able to game properly under Linux

Cheers!

For those that end up here with a similar issue:
Debian's nvidia drivers (compiled & installed using module-assistant) aren't good enough. Using the official Nvidia drivers and their installation scripts (found at nvidia.com/drivers) improve performance and graphics dramatically.
