startx gives me a blank screen and hangs

Hello,
Over the past couple of days, I have been trying to get my graphics card to work. Countless times I have failed doing so. It seems when I issue startx, it gives me a blank screen, and I can't seem to kill it. All that's left for me to do is to do a cold reboot. Although I did experience strange garbled up text on the screen before (using startx) I decided to enable frame buffering in my kernel (I was thinking that would be the problem.), which has also failed to work. Whenever I take a look at my XFree log, though, it seems to not take my resoution, and I have NO clue how to fix this. Heres my specs:
-video card
GeFore FX 5200 Ultra (AGP)
- driver version
The latest one that's out (can't remember the version )
- distribution
Gentoo 1.4
- video bios revision (look in /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 while X is running)
Doesn't seem to have one
- processor
AMD Duron 1.2 Ghz
- motherboard model (especially if you're having lockups)
SiS 730 S

And some more information: I'm not sure if Agpgart was needed or not for my graphics card, so I compiled it as a module. Although I don't think the module is installed, I've heard that this can effect the nvidia module (though it looks like it doesn't). If this is the case then I should remove it, though I'm not sure if it's the Nvidia AGP or the AGPGART that's messing things up. I've tried both before I enabled frame buffering, and they didn't work.

Not sure if it helps, but I'm getting a very similar problem in the thread I just posted. X dies at the same time in the log file. I have an SiS 746 chip though, so this might be an SiS/NVidia issue somehow.
