Default advice on which card to buy

Hi.

i currently have an msi motherboard with kt133a chipset. the agp port can do agp 4x max.
cpu is amd 1200 athlon and 512MB ram.

I'm running rh linux 2.4.20-19.8 kernel and ximian desktop 2.
Currently i have geforce 2 mx 200 64MB.

everything is working perfect, however i recently bought nwn for linux, and i'm having bad performance at 1024x768 res. so i'm thinking of upgrading my geforce.

My problem is:
- I'm currently thinking of buying the fx 5900 or 5600, however i'm wondering if my mobo with the 4x agp will lower the 5900 performance to a 5600. Because if that's the case, then i'd better just buy a 5600 (and save 300$) altogether.

or will the 5900 still give me better performace, without upgrading my mobo/cpu/ram?

can anyone give suggestions?

Thanks for your help.
Fadi.

I had a similar config w yours: Athlon 1.4 with GF2MX400 and I recently upgraded to an FX 5600.

It runs at AGP4x (abit kg7 mobo w/ AMD761 chipset) and at 1024 I virtually went 2.2x in Quake3, enemy territory etc.

However I don't think a 5900 would be hampered by AGP 4x instead of 8x. Most of the tests (sorry dont have a url) show that the diff is negligible. At most you could lose 10% but going to 5600 levels, no way, out of the question.
I'd say go for the 5900.

At a second thought, u r going to be cpu limited.

With my Athlon 1.4 and FX5600 I get the _same_ performance (137-140fps) in Quake3 at 1024,800 and 640x480. The same happens in RTCW demo. So an athlon 1.4 cannot really push an FX5600 to its limits.

In newer games however which are more GPU limited like Doom III (which will come out for linux) a 5900 would trash a 5600.
