Just an FYI. I have been running my rig with 4Gb of RAM and no page file for a good few months with no problems at all. That is until I got the new gfx cards and enabled AA on Crysis64. I started getting 'lack of memory' errors within a few seconds of starting a level. I re-enabled the page file and all is well again.
BTW this was in DX9 with all 'Very High' settings forced in the .cfg files. vMemory usage would get to just over 2Gb and the game stopped. I can only assume Windows limits the vRam usage to half of the total in the system for any one program. Not 100% sure though. |

afaik windows still needs to use the pagefile regardless of how much ram you have... afaik its always best to set it to windows managed rather than a custom size

System managed? Seriously?
Ive never heard anyone recommend that, Maybe Vista does things better??. System managed while running super high res texture packs would surely do some major pagefile fragmenting no? Having just the minimum 200mb set on the OS partition is fine if you have enough ram ,4gb isn't enough so its back to 200mb on the os and 7000mb on a separate drive from Crysis/HL2 for me. Speaking of which is there a pagedefrag for Vista64 yet or do you just run a command or something?

I noticed that the little green disk "loading" icon was flashing through 3 GPU benchmark runs. Tells me that it has a LOT of data to load. Even with over 700mb video memory and 4 gigs of system memory availble with an X64 os, with page filing turned off, Vista will minimize crysis and tell me that the system is running low on memory. Does the same with HL2 cinematic mod 8 as well. Turning on page filing and the errors go away... for me at least.

Does Crysis make use of readyboost or is pagefile more efficient?
Or what?

If the option is there to turn it off...Windows doesn't need it. That simple. I've been running everything with no page file, even DOOM 3 which says it needs a large paging file runs better without it on.
