I think the gameplay has changed a lot. With Tiberian Sun back in 1999 the scale of battles dropped significantly from the early C&C games and they went for more varied kinds of units to make different strategies possible. It sounded good but it was just overdone IMO. The early ones just felt a lot more realistic. TS and RA2 just got too crazy and went all sci-fi with a more "flashy" cartoonish graphic style and focused way too much on the cinematics and getting actors from the sci-fi channel.

To me, Generals is the only game that had a similar setting and feel to the early games and oddly enough, it was set in a completely different universe and most likely wasn't even intended to be a C&C game at the beginning.

I can't speak for C&C3 though as I haven't played it much yet. From what I did play it seemed like a mix of TS and Generals, which isn't bad.

You can download the original Red Alert for free. If you pre order RA3 they will send you RA2 as well.
