260 GTX good enough?

Well my 24" LCD came in, the bad news is that its defective and will have to go back to newegg. I can only use it for a few minutes at a time until the backlight gives out and then it takes a while to get it to turn back on, I think its overheating, maybe the fan in it is broken.

The good news is that for the short time I got to use it I can tell you that the GTX 260 handled that res like a champ, I tested Oblivion, DiRT, Jericho and Bioshock. For the most part performance was close to 1680X1050 with losses of around 5-7 frames in the most extreme cases. Over all I was impressed.

Sucks that I got a bad one, guess I will send it back and try again. That is the first Open Box Item that I have ever had to return to newegg, I have always had good luck with open box until now.

those games are a joke for even the 8800's (barring you're using Quarl's texture pack III for oblivion).

Fire up crysis and see how that turns out. As far as I'm concerned, that game is the real test for a graphics card.

I am using Quarl's Texture pack for Oblivion.


Jericho is certainly not a joke when you consider I am running 4XAA smoothing, you would not be able to do that with an 8800GTX at 1920X1200 resolution and get playable FPS. I remember how bad that game stressed the 8800GTX at 1680X1050 with just 2XAA smoothing, it ran fine without it but once smoothing was turned on it was very demanding.

Bioshock I failed to mention I am running 4XAA as well, turn on the AA and that game becomes pretty demanding at high res and again would be to much for an 8800GTX. UE3 engine games are a breeze until you combine AA with it.

DiRT I guess you never played because its actually very demanding, even more so than GRID.

Tested it this morning and it took about the same hit as the other games mentioned, still very playable for me using all high settings with 2XAA running around 35-45fps.

Sytem specs just FYI:

Q6600@3.4ghz
GTX 260 760core 1540shader 2600mem
4gbs DDR2@950mhz 4 4 4 12

I dont have it yet anyway, im not making the same mistake that I made by purchasing STALKER right after it came out. I will wait until it has about say ohhhh.......a dozen or so patches.

An overclocked 260 will handle 4xAA in everything but Crysis all VH @ 1920x. It's a good card.

If you want an added edge grab the 280 or an HD 4870 X2.

Is it THAT much different than the first stalker? Because the first one on mine stays pegged at 60 fps with the texture pack and float32 and all details at max.

From screen shots, it doesn't appear to be that much more impressive visually but of course, I could be wrong. If it's not and it does run like crap then shame on the developers.

FastRedPonyCar, you and I have similar systems.That's a nice OC you have there with your card. Under load my CPU hovers around 50-55* Celcius. Is this normal? or do I need a better cooler. Also how are you finding gaming with your machine. Myself I think I'll hang on to my card for a bit longer as I don't think I can justify spending more cash on a new card at this time...untill I load FarCry 2*sigh*

gaming kicks butt. Crysis benchmarks at around 32fps at 1680X1050 with the xtreme config's next to highest level.

I'm using the zalman 92mm cooler and it seems to be working very well for me. The intel burn in and prime95 can't put a dent in the load temps.
