Default Testing against xorg-server 1.5.1

I have a bleeding edge xorg server set up at a non-standard directory.

I've tried installing the nvidia driver using the --x-library-path and --no-kernel-module but it:

a. wipes out the kernel module
b. doesn't install the nvidia driver in the x-library-path dir.

I can't tell if it compiles against the testing libs or the standard libs but apparently neither of those options does what it says it does.

Grrrr.

This obviously crimps testing a bit, since I can't easily switch between the stable install and the testing install.

Right now running 64-177.67 but would like to get to 177.76. I really don't want to wipe out my working x install, though....

I'm assuming you installed from tarball or git. Where did you install xorg libs? /usr/lib? If so, then you overrwrote your old xorg stuff. Is that right?

I'm being careful as I don't want to trash my current install; I'd like to test first....

Duh! I never thought of that.

Done. Now I have to test Xephyr and see if GLX, DRI, and compositing work!

nvidia-installer uses the --x-module-path option to control where the modules (i.e. nvidia_drv.so and libglx.so) are installed. --x-library-path controls where the XvMC libraries go.

If your custom X server is in the installer's search path, it ought to be able to get the right settings automatically from the -showDefaultLibPath and -showDefaultModulePath options in the server.

Oh yeah, and as for the --no-kernel-module option, that just tells it not to install the kernel module. It's intended for systems where the kernel module was installed some other way. If you previously installed a kernel module with nvidia-installer, the first thing the new installer will do is uninstall the old driver. You shouldn't need the --no-kernel-module option for what you're trying to do.
