Default big instability problem

hi there,

my config:
motherboard: g33 (gateway gt5228j)
cpu: q6600
gfx: nvidia 8500gt (pci express)

if i use nvidia driver the computer cannot pass 2days of uptime.
suddenly after 1day and half, the screen freeze, i can see green pixels/artefacts/glitches
and everything is dead .. the system reboot itself after a minute.

if i don't using nvidia driver the system runs stable, so it's not hardware

i don't know what to do..
please help, what should i do ?

thanks for your attention

hi logan, thanks for the reply but,

since the machine runs stable if i don't use nvidia driver,
i would think there's no problem with my hardware ?

i think it might be either a configuration problem (xorg.conf) or that particular nvidia card (8500gt pci express) that came preinstalled with that machine (gateway 5228j) that would be somehow defective, or would requiere some special tweaks to work normaly ?

usualy when i install nvidia driver everything is done automaticaly, i don't configure nothing and it just work.. but ?

Are you using a framebuffer driver? I have no idea if it's related to your problem, but maybe try disabling framebuffer from grub (no vga=/video= statements). There's a message about rivafb in your log which may be or may not be relevant, but worth a try.

here's my kernel line in grub:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-5-generic root=UUID=3c7c3b75-620e-4c21-a719-ab0d29f70f0f ro quiet splash pci=nommconf

i added the last part (pci=nommconf ) after reading the sticky post about instability issues.

here's the list of kernel module:

Default Re: big instability problem

Hi all

Same problem here won't run for more than 12 hours usually less random.
Freezing, flashing pixels over screen, blankscreen etc. Xid NVRM errors in log file

However doing the following seems to make a big difference to stability.

from X terminal session as root tellinit 3

modprobe -r nvidia
modprobe nvidia

tellinit 5

After seems to run so far longer than I've seen with this driver.
Noticed after doing an update without doing a full reboot.
Make a difference for anybody else?

Current setup v177.78 8500gt dell dimension 8400

Regards
