Default 177.78 pretty noisy

just installed 177.78 on a Dell XPS M1330. Result: The fan goes up to full speed immediately, as soon as I enter X. The old 173.14 works fine, and I don't have the impression that the laptop gets extremely hot.

Thought you should know.

Regards

next time I'll get my hands on my m1330, I'll see if I encounter the same

what does nvidia-settings say about the temperature of the gpu ?

Watching some H.264 movie (720p) it says 60C. Fan is on, of course, but not on full speed.

For the new driver I did not try.

that should be pretty normal, it get something between 56 - 70C

could you please test with the new driver and see if a temperature-rise is the cause of that noise ?

I've got 177.78 on an M1330 with BIOS A12 and kernel 2.6.27-rc8. The fan doesn't come on at full speed except when I compile a new kernel.

Most of the time it's fairly quiet.

Ehud
Code:
/tmp$ sensors -f
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +89.6F (high = +212.0F, crit = +212.0F)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +100.4F (high = +212.0F, crit = +212.0F)

I've replaced the disk by a ssd disk. When I switch on the M1330 it doesn't make any noise. After 30 minutes or so the fan starts spinning, but with a very low speed. Hard to hear at all. Thats how it should be.

So I won't install A12. There is no way back to get the old temperature curve for the fan speed.

Sorry, but I won't install it again. As written before, the fan speed went up to full speed when the XWindow server and the new nvidia module were started. The PC was cold at that time.

Yeah A12 is VERY VERY aggressive about turning the fan on. This is part of the workaround that Dell and HP rolled out to prevent the G84/G86 chips delaminating.

I've got the A11 BIOS saved as a file. I'm thinking I may reapply it.

Thats surely the most efficient way to destroy customer trust.

Good luck on installing the backup.
