Default Vsync does not work properly on hdmi connected monitor (177.78)

Enabling vsync (e.g. in kwin's settings) leads to the expected results (smooth animations, no tearing), but enabling it when connected to my external dell 2709W monitor over HDMI, I get vblank artifacts and strange flicker with vsync turned either on or off. This also happens for XV surfaces, and non-composited window managers.

The strange flicker I'm seeing is hard to describe, but a fadeout might look a bit like this:
Code:
\
 \/\
    \
     \/\
        \
         \/\
            \
             \/\
                \
                 \/\
                    \
I'm also seeing this with e.g. a fading title in a movie, played through XV with vsync turned on.

I'm using the 177.78 driver on an 8400m GS, and iirc this behavior has started with the 177.xx series.

Again, this only happens on my external monitor. I can even have both monitors enabled using twinview, and still see the flicker/vblanks on my external, while my internal monitor is ok. I've tried changing the vsynced-to monitor for XV in nvidia-settings, but this doesn't help (and only would for XV anyway). Playing with other nvidia-settings and xorg.conf parameters didn't really help either.

It also doesn't seem to depend on resolution, which is 1920x1200 for my external monitor. Setting it to a lower res does not help.

Hi, I have a Dell 2408WFP and noticed this "diagonal" flicker too...

I use a 7600GT with latest beta driver.

What's the revision of your monitor? Mine is rev. 00.

Have you tested this monitor in another computer with other operating system etc?

The flicker happens all the time or just when there's motion?

Well, now that I see. If this behaviour started with 177.xx driver, then it could be driver's fault, not the monitor. You're right.

My explanation of the flicker was perhaps not really clear (or my understanding of yours isn't).
That 'graph' I drew is just a representation of a window's opacity (y-axis) in function of time (x-axis).

I doubt my monitor is the cause, since it works well with older drivers (albeit a lot slower), and I see no such behavior running Win XP.

I've done some further testing, and setting NoFlip to True in xorg.conf does help with this issue. The flicker is gone, but I still see some vblank artifacts, and it doesn't help in any way with XV surfaces.

No change with 177.80

Any ideas?

Slightly different, but might help for XV.
I had a similar issue when connecting to my tv via hdmi and playing movies. For me I could workaround this using "nvidia-settings"
I noticed that after connecting and enabling twinview via nvidia-settings that the refresh rate reported for the tv was not what I had set it to under "X Server Display Configuration" I had to change the refresh to something different, and then back again. After that the correct refresh was displayed for the screen under e.g. "DFP-X (XXX).
Once that was done, changing the "Sync to this device" for XVideo helped.
