Default 177.78: Unbearable fan noise and hardware crash

There appears to be a bug with the new 177.78 beta and the Dell M1330 laptop. This bug was not present in the previous 177.76 beta.

Symptoms: As soon as X is started the laptop fan ramps up to full speed. The fan is permanently set to maximum speed even when the machine is rebooted. In fact, the only way to make the fan go back to the default behavior is to completely power down the machine (and not start X as this ramps the fan up again).

The fan speed is not related to the GPU or CPU temperature and does not depend on whether compositing is enabled or not.

Using the 177.78 driver on this machine is unbearable!

I have the same problem here with my Dell Latitude D630

I was running 177.67 drivers with no issues, and just upgraded to 177.80 drivers and right when I start X I get loud fan noise that I've never heard from my laptop, and then the fans cycle on and off one for 5-10sec then off for 1-2sec over and over again. I've gone back down to the 177.67 drivers and the fan issue has gone away.

Kernel Version 2.6.25

It seems to be related to DELL hardware, but still, the 177.76 was working correctly regarding fan speeds.

I can confirm that this issue is still present in the 177.80 drivers.

Nvidia, I know the 8400GS is dodgy and prone to failure - but increasing the fan speed is infuriating!

Same problem here, again with a Dell XPS M1330 and 8400 GS and 177.80 drivers.

This problem appeared on 177.78.

Ehud
I have updated my bios to the A12 version and it resolved the problem.

I was so frustrated with this issue, I am glad that I won't have to go back to an older version.

Just get the latest bios from the link below. It says it is only for Windows Vista but it also works on Windows XP. I upgraded mine on XP.

The new bios just ramps up the fan speed by default - not as fast, but it's also annoying.

Hi Nvidia folks,

Face it: Messing around with the fan speed just makes your customers angry. This gives you a very bad reputation. You might save a few bucks now, but you are loosing even your most loyal customers.

Please keep the fan speed low, and replace the faulty cards by a fixed model instead.

Dear nVidia,

Our laptop fans are not responsible for your complete lack of QA. The fact that you shipped crappy 8400 to laptop manufacturers does not mean that you can turn our laptops into vacuum cleaners. Stop doing this crap behind your paying customers, exchange the faulty units with something that works, and come clean once and for all.

Sincerely,
Future Intel customer
