The odd thing is, I've been getting amazing frame rates in this area, even with all these trees - for some reason since last week when I reinstalled FSX + FTX my PC is flying, getting better frame rates than I've ever had. The 1GB card is certainly a factor, as before all the texture swapping would slow things down, but it was the fresh install that really seemed to perk things up...so it's certainly worth a try.
Now, the fps was up and down here, but I was ave over 40 - shame the stutters came to spoil the fun. ![]() |

Are using the 4870 1Gb. Carenado makes the best GA planes.

No, it's a 9800gt - just got it for the 1gb of RAM, as I was regularly exceeding 512mb of my 8800. It really works too, I was flying over VFR London last night at over 20fps, when I could barely get ten before and that was between the pauses.
![]() Agree about Carenado - love their stuff, though I think they could have offered a discount for those with the older versions, to upgrade to the SP2 models JT8D-9A great shots - lots of drama in them. |

It's a great bit of scenery - needs a low and slow approach to appreciate it fully.

Great london Shots there mark the thames is looking nice and dirty
![]() Does VFR London have placed ambient sounds? thats one of the area's i think FSX is very very poor in & think it would be very strange flying over london with out at least some backbround noise, also are those trees custom objects or are they pulling a lord howe and replacing the default autogen without asking? I just found that kick ATI's Cat A.I. to advanced really improves my FPS but i also get a FSP bouncing effect where it will go from 70-7-50-70-50-7 not sure what it is maybe im hitting the Vram limit(not that this should be possible under vista)gonna have a play with textbandwidth and see if i can reign in the bounce a bit laters steve btw im gonna throw my lastest tweaked water normals up later on tonight once my RS account stops timing out |

I have not noticed any ambient Steve, though to be honest I often have to turn the sound down, as the engine noise get on my nerves after a while, esp. the ones where you can here the sample looping - so I usually end up flying to music instead.
I get the exact same frame rate up-and-down you describe, from very high to very low - it certainly isn't VRAM, as the most I measured used so far is 620mb - I have a feeling it's just the engine having to give rendering the back seat to perform another task. I think it has always been recommended that a limit is set to allow for this - but it is nice to have that fluidity you get with 'unlimited' What would be good is a hotkey so you can switch, on the fly, between an unlimited rate and a chosen cap. I look forward to trying your new normals, even though they are intended more for DX10 - those shots showing the river Thames would not look so good without the high resolution your normals bring. |

- Base diffuse textures only.
- No specular, no normal maps. - Just basic tear/wear. - No markings. - Engines and flaps uncompleted. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The status of my horrible stutters with newer Nvidia driver is SOLVED. For now anyway.
All I had to do was lock my framerate. I had really grown used to my 30+ framerate, and since the very act of locking causes a performance hit, I've avoided trying it. It's an acceptable fix for now, so I'll just have to be satisfied with 20-25fps. On the positive side it's a totally smooth 25fps, much smoother than locked could ever be, and now that I fly that way the smoothness makes the lower framerate feel ok. Since my frame cap is pushed down I can use higher levels of AA and not see a performance hit. At 1600x1200 with my overclock I can use the new 8xSQ mode in the 2.4.2 nHancer, which is 2x2 supersampling with 2x multisampling. It sure looks nice when supersampled in both directions. Overall I'm just pleased I got it fixed, even if it does mean lower framerates from now on. Maybe I'll get a Nehalem system in a few months and then everything will change again. Here's a shot where I'm pegged at 25fps. ![]()
