I've had the driver-change trigger it as well, which is stupid, obviously their method of tracking changes got dumber between XP & Vista.

I apologize to the OP for taking it off-topic, my bad.

sata driver will also trigger it at for XP.

activation tracks few parts of the system, and HDD controller is one of them. which is true for both XP and Vista.

Let's get this back on topic. If I had my choice I would choose Vista 64 because x64 for XP was an afterthought and feels like a hack job.

Windows XP 64-bit Edition.

I have two identical systems one with XP64 and the other with Vista Home Premium 64 and without question my XP comp runs faster, smother and I have no trouble with drivers or backward compatibility. But XP64 wasn't so good until SP2 which really made it solid. Vista just isn’t up to speed with XP yet. But I do like Vista 64 over Vista 32, seems more stable. The only downside to a 64bit OS no matter what it is is security software. Most companies still don't support 64bit computing for Antivirus/Spyware so you have to look hard for something good.

For gaming I use XP x64, for office and messaging I use vista, so rarely boot into Vista

Been on vista Hope premium x64 for almost a year now, running CCleaner, Registry Clean Expert, CleanUp!, Spybot S&D & AusLogics Disk Defrag once a week keeps my system running smooth, error and problem free 99.9% of the time ... I remember trying XP Pro x64 bit a long time ago, man the driver/software support was terrible ... i think i lasted like 4 hours before i uninstalled and went back to XP Pro x32, .... NO way could i ever go back to any version of XP now.
