I agree with you there Jerry, the drivers should be laid open. Meanwhile, NVidia's work isn't that bad. The installation (configuration, recompilation with the interfaces of each new kernel, esp recompilation of the kernel itself if NVidia's AGP driver is to be used) is bothersome - but the performance is very good.

I'd recommend to use "glxinfo" to check out if 3D accel is actually enabled - if is says:
"direct rendering: Yes" and "OpenGL version string: 1.4.0 NVIDIA 43.63" (or the current version) then you've got it working.

BTW, 43.63 has a better performance than 44.96 for whatever reason.
