yes, i tried that before.. it didn't work.
However i just tried again on 180.08 and it seems to work..but it keeps skipping back to previous frames, and has a lot of 'hick ups'.

edit; about the Grey.ts: It works fine, however during the part "stop polizei" it slows down significantly. In VLC, this does not happen.

Did you run the MPlayer patch script *before* installing the 180.06 driver?

MPlayer with VDPAU patches requires the NVIDIA driver to be installed before configure/make is run. I *suspect* that what happened is: You both attempted to build MPlayer before installing the NVIDIA driver, so the VDPAU auto-detection failed, and hence the build failed with the errors above(1). However, later you installed the NVIDIA driver, and/or added the flag to force VDPAU to be enabled, and everything worked. If this is the case, you should now be able to re-run configure without the force flag, and rebuild MPlayer, and it should all just work now.

(1) Those errors (which occur when MPlayer is patched to support VDPAU, configure attempted to autodetect VDPAU, but failed) are now fixed in our code-base, and will be included whenever a new MPlayer patch is released.

I tried to compile with the mplayer script in a P4 3ghz socket 775 system with a 8400GS card, but I get that same error.

I have installed the 180.08 driver and rebooted the machine, so all new configurations should have been applied. Running ubuntu 8.10.

your x264 library is too new. You need something nearer to August.

The errors he quoted have nothing to do with a too old x264 library, but the vdpau libraries not being found.
A solution to this problem has been posted many times earlier

Sorry, I thought the solution to my problem would be found elsewhere since I had done all the right steps (except from configuring with ./configure --enable-vdpau). This still gives the same error - perhaps I found the wrong solution - I'll look further.

Wow, i just got my 8400 in the mail and tested vdpau out! What a differance before playing a 13.5MB/s HD-PVR clip pegged 1 core on my AMD X2 5700. Now it hoving arount 3%! on my 1080p screen.

I did notice some Audio Video sync but i may need to do some config changes.

Cant wait to get this supported in MythTV! I know its in the works.

Thanks Nvidia, been waiting on this for some time and its driving hardware sales for you im sure!

Would it be possible to get the correct version of libx264 from git and compile it along with ffmpeg so errors like this don't show up, depending on what version is in the distro being used?

Probably not; I mean, we could fetch the code and build x264 and force Mplayer/ffmpeg to build against it, but then running MPlayer wouldn't work, because we wouldn't be able to force MPlayer to find the correct libx264 .so file at runtime. To solve this, we'd have to either write complex instructions on how to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH correctly, or somehow hack MPlayer to build with LD_RUN_PATH. Neither of these are what we really want to spend time on supporting.

However, we could disable x264 support when configuring MPlayer, via:

--disable-x264-lavc --disable-x264

I'll make sure this gets added to the build script.

The VDPAU effort is really welcome.

I had a problems on my 8500GT: when playing a movie with gmplayer-vdpau, switching to full screen via the GUI didn't work. When I pressed it, the screen went black, and only the sound remained. It didn't help to switch back to normal window again, the screen was left black.
Is it meant to work like this ? (I.e. scaling is not supported ?)

Another question:
Is vdpau meant to work with mencoder as well ? (e.g. using ffmpeg12vdpau to transcode from a DVD to divx)

It's rather easy to adapt vdpau patches to current version of mplayer...
