I got a GeForce 6200 and a GeForce 8600 GTS in my system, but the GeForce 6200 is Screen 0, while GeForce 8600 has Screen 1 and 2. I have no luck starting the patched mplayer, as I get
Error at libvo/vo_vdpau.c:179

Is there a way to specify the screen? The current screens are together via xinerama...

1. Because that requires root access (make install). Bad idea to force root just to install a DEPEND for a program.

2. Doesn't play nice package managers. (apt, yum, yast, etc).

If it works for you, use it. No need to force everyone...

Firs of all it can be simply commented, and who needs it, will uncomment that part an install libx264 in that way.

1. Yes it needs root access, but do you know another way of software installation?
2. Yes, but if we could just install this libs from repos, we have no need to compile it itself.

It was just one of possibilities, if you know better one - tell it.

I'm not sure which PDF you're looking at but the supported cards are listed here:

7xxx cards aren't supported. They may have hardware support for assisted H.264 decoding (which is different from the paths in VDPAU) but that would only be exposed on Windows through DXVA. On Linux, only MPEG-2 assisted decoding is exposed through XvMC.

Aye. But before you lose all hope, you have to consider that XvMC is going to be extended to assist in more formats besides mpeg2. When this will happen, I have no idea (before vaapi), or whether nvidia will support this extension, no clue. It's a long shot...but it is there.

Why just not to update patches for mplayer?
You'll get something like this for current trunk of mplayer: http://rapidshare.com/files/16586316...s.tar.bz2.html
And becouse it's newer version it's working with new x264 releases.

Try with "-xineramascreen number-of-the-screen".

Has anyone adapted the patch to work against mplayer trunk ?

It seems that very little thing fail in the patch ; and I didn't bother looking in the details hoping someone already did ..

If not, tomorrow I will work on porting the VDPAU changes over

For those using gentoo, the VDPAU patch for mplayer'svn trunk is in the berkano's overlay :-) (so are the latest nvidia drivers and utils).
