But what would prevent me from playing back HD-DVDs? If it is software, I'm certain that support wont fade till Windows 7 successor. Which gives me at least about 4 years to enjoy. At which point I could easily convert them to BD as you've stated.

Am I wrong?

hardware can, what if your device eventually breaks? there won't any never models made.

Hmm... good point.

Guess I've not thought of that since I cannot recall the last time I had an optical drive fail on me.
