Default 188.x and KDE = excessive memory usge

kernel 2.6.27.8
or
kernel
2.6.28-rc*
KDE 3.5.9/10
video card nVidia Go 7400
nvidia driver 177.x
kernel 2.6.27.8

2.6.28-rc*
KDE 3.5.9/10
video card nVidia Go 7400
nvidia driver 177.x

memory usage after boot:
-/+ buffers/cache used: 89MB

kernel 2.6.27.8
or
kernel
2.6.28-rc*
KDE 3.5.9/10
video card nVidia Go 7400
nvidia driver 188.x

memory usage after boot:
-/+ buffers/cache used: 323MB

with 177.x series kded is using 26MB
with 188.x series kded is using 183MB

memory usage by X is not changed (27MB vs 31MB)

no other applications running.
I wonder what is causing so excessive memory usage by 188.x
will it be fixed?

are you using the latest 180.16?

I think this is a known bug. I'm on 180.08 still and I used to get horrendous 500Mb memory leaks (usually from plasma). It hasn't happened recently though so I can't tell if it was me using 4.2 svn, using suse 11.1 alphas or the nvidia beta drivers.

I have not tested 180.16 as there is nothing in the driver description that would indicate that memory problems were fixed.

For me and my system, I saw a huge improvement when I installed 180.16 compared to 180.11. I am running KDE 4.1.3 on sidux.

For me, when I get this bug my X is fine for around 24 hours and then sometimes this bug gets triggered with no changes in plasma (no plasmoids changed etc.)

also
when checking xrestop it shows a large quantities of pixmap memory usage in the plasma pid (sometimes blank application, recently it has been called Qt-Subapplication, never plasma). Shutting down plasma properly via "kquitapp plasma" then restarting plasma, the new instance of plasma has low memory usage but the memory is nowhere to be seen anywhere.

No memleaks here with 180.16 or 180.11. 24/7 no issues at all.
