I guess you did not make the downloaded file executable.
You can do so by executing:
chmod +x NVIDIA_Linux-x86-173.14.12.pkg1.run
Otherwise, check the permissions with "ls -l" in the folder containing the file.

Mhm.
Then either, you have been into another folder in the terminal you used (which did not contain the downloaded file) or the filename did not match the name of the downloaded file.
To learn navigating in terminal, this here:
http://linuxcommand.org/lts0020.php
might be a good introduction.
In addition to that, NvFuchs' comments (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...54&postcount=3) apply ^^.

The name of the file should be:
Quote:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12.pkg1.run
Go to the directory you downloaded it to and Run:
Quote:
sudo chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12.pkg1.run
Then do alt+ctrl+F1 and login. Then run:
Quote:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
Then change to the download directory and run:
Quote:
sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12.pkg1.run
