Monitor out of Range

I'm new to linux, new as in never used it. I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 and ran the package updater so my system is up to date. However, the system defined driver only let me have a resolution off 800x600 at 61hz, not so good. I have a SVA 9005w-b lcd 19" monitor which is running at 1440x900 at 60hz currently. It's capable of running at 1440x900 at 75hz, that's the max range.
So I installed the 177.82 driver (recommended) by the way. Then I rebooted and the login screen for Ubuntu came up looking better than before, no longer 800x600 but higher. I login, then my screen goes blank and the monitor says it's out of range because my resolution is 1600x1200 at 75.4hz The max for my monitor is 1440x900 at 75hz I believe. I am currently booted into my Vista OS, but I would like to keep Ubuntu and learn the linux platform. So how do I fix this? I'll attach my NVIDIA System Information report in case it might help.

Boot your system into recovery mode from the grub menu. Let it bootup and you will get a menu. Choose XFix and let it run. When complete choose resume normal boot.

OK, so that got me back to the original 800x600 display, which looks pretty horrible on my monitor. When I logged back in it said that proprietary driver were available to make the display better. One quick note here, when I ran the live cd I knew that I had a problem, so when I did the actual install I did it with the safe graphics option. Anyways, my new question is, how do I get a proper resolution? The only option I have in the resolution preferences is 800x600 or 640x480 I believe it is. Is there a way to set the settings before I activate the proprietary driver?

No, you will need the driver to get your correct resolutions (Although you could edit your xorg.conf to use the "nv" driver instead of "vesa" in the mean time).

I know I need the driver, but I don't know how to configure it. Whenever I install the driver it prompts me to reboot so that the driver can be activated. Whenever I reboot the login screen comes up and looks pretty good, no more 800x600 resolution. However, once I login it sets the resolution to 1600x1200 at 75.4hz which is out of my monitor's range. So the only thing I see is a blank screen with an error message from my monitor telling me it's out of range. I need to know how to set the resolution either from the terminal, or before I activate the driver.

No I haven't. I'm a noob to the whole linux scene so I don't know the proper commands or tools to use. I'm just wanting to learn linux because I hear a lot of good things about it and I wanted to try something different. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There could be a number of things going wrong. You'll have to provide more info, see stickies for how to produce a bug report.

First unload any driver you have loaded. Go into the terminal and type and enter:

sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall

To load envy go into terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get install envyng-core envyng-qt

Envyng will be loaded into:

Applications>System Tools

Click on Envyng and load the recomended driver.
