Ignore/delete this post. It isn't related to nvidia driver.

I have the same problem. What do you think is the cause?

Hi, at least here it seems that X is causing the high cpu usage. I reported it to X developers:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18865

Maybe you could post there to show them that more people have this issue... They asked if this happened with just the nvidia proprietary driver or with the nv open source too. This happen with just the proprietary driver, although I can't say that it's a problem with the nvidia kernel driver.

But I hope this will be fixed soon, because it's very annoying.

Dâniel,

I have posted a message in that bugzilla, but in the meantime I have discovered the problem may not be related to DPMS.
At first I assumed that because I found this situation when I returned to my system and woke op the monitor, and it happened a couple of times that way.
However, now I have set the monitor off time to 45 minutes and I have discovered that this high CPU usage already occurs after about 15 minutes of inactivity, so long before the monitor switches off.
Is that happening on your system as well?

Here the behaviour doesn't always occur. Sometimes I have high cpu usage, sometimes not. So I can't tell for sure.

I saw your post there. Interesting because then it could be related to some input related driver? Mouse, keyboard?

Maybe. I removed the following from the mouse config:
Option "AutoSoft" "on"

Now it does not happen anymore. But like you, I cannot be sure until I tested a bit longer.

Well, I don't use that option, so I imagine it isn't related to the problem, in my case. Anyway, if it helps you, at least it's a hint what options to try.

It happens here as well.
I'm using opensuse 11.1 and nvidia 177.82 driver.
I have disabled the screensaver and DPMS. Still happens.

Whenever I leave the computer for like 10-20 minutes (haven't checked for the exact number of minutes) X is taking 100% CPU from one core. If I move the mouse or keyboard, the CPU goes down to normal.

No idea what the cause is yet.

I thought I had fixed it but it has come back today. I am using KDE3 but today I started a KDE4 program, and the same problem occurred again.
Later I stopped the program and killed the kde4 related processes (kdeinit4, kded4 etc) and the problem disappeared again.
Still investigating...

It looks like it's caused by powerdevil in kde4:
