If you install the binary driver, ensure that the linux-restricted-modules or linux-restricted-modules-common packages have been uninstalled or disable modules in /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common like this: DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidia_new".

Here is the solution:
Uninstall everything and envyng too (binary driver too - NVIDIA Installer with option --uninstall), in System->Administration->Drivers(Restricted) mark version 173 (recommended) or do it manually e.g. in Terminal, in Synaptic (probably nvidia-glx-173 if you've got it in your repositories), reset X-es (ctrl+alt+backspace) and reset your PC, next edit file:
Code:
/etc/modprobe.d/lrm-video
like this:
Code:
# Make nvidia/nvidia_legacy and fglrx use /sbin/lrm-video to load
install fglrx /sbin/lrm-video fglrx $CMDLINE_OPTS
#install nvidia /sbin/lrm-video nvidia $CMDLINE_OPTS
#install nvidia_legacy /sbin/lrm-video nvidia_legacy $CMDLINE_OPTS
#install nvidia_new /sbin/lrm-video nvidia_new $CMDLINE_OPTS
next edit file:
Code:
/etc/modules
add line:
Code:
nvidia
now type:
Code:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
reset X-es and your PC.
Thats all! I hope it works, he he...
God-speed! Happy New Year!

I don't know why this doesn't work, and
Code:
modprobe nvidia
show anything? (do rmmod nvidia and this) How looks your xorg.conf? Maybe Busid "?" in Section "Device" has changed? Show result
Code:
lspci
command, and do e.g. startx > log.txt.
Eventually, downgrade your kernel 2.6.27-10 to 2.6.27-9, reinstall your system or report it on launchpad.
