It's a hardware problem... overheating GPU... this link was called a rumor a few months ago:

And confirmed here with a note from Nvidia to their partners:

More and more laptop GeForce 8x00M chips are showing what you saw: artefacts, strange colors, ...

Thanks! My Dell D620 had its motherboard replaced, XPS M1330 is awaiting motherboard replacement - got Dell's engineer coming on Monday to replace it. Next Business Day fix/replacement warranty on Dell products rocks!
