Smile Compile Error - Nvidia driver installation

Hi,

I am trying to install 177.82 on my openSuse 11.1. I dont want to use the yast one-click installation because it doesn't recognize my monitor as widescreen.

I have installed kernel header and sources but during the installation, I get error. Here is the log file:

You're very likely doing nothing wrong, but the driver cannot compile with the SUSE kernel. Wait until one of the devs takes a look into it.

hmm... what kernel version does opensuse 11.1 use? If it's 2.6.28 I can't get 177.82 to work either. If you try the latest beta driver, it supposedly works.

It doesn't compile on Gentoo either, I am getting the same errors as the OP.
2.6.27-gentoo-r7
I have an NVIDIA FX5200 256RAM.

you guys having problems with PARAVIRT most probably will need the patch from the following thread - if it's not already applied / included in mainline:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118096

and a patch for 2.6.27 and/or 2.6.28 - dunno which patch you'll need for that

Hi,

I just tried the latest beta version 180.xx from Nvidia and I am still getting a compile error. I looked at the error log and although the locations seem to be different, its still a casting error (from integer to pointer). Please find attached the file.

Does ANY version of Nvidia driver work with 2.6.28? Is this issue specific to the kernel shipped with openSuse or does it apply to all latest kernel versions in general?

Here is the log file:
I get E404 when trying to open your logfile.

Concerning the widescreen recognition: I doubt that compiling the nvidia driver yourself will change much on this issue since it's most likely a matter of configuration. Looking a /var/log/Xorg.0.log is the first choice when the resolution is wrong. Typically, openSUSE still adds Modeline entrys to /etc/X11/xorg.conf by default which limits the number of usable resolutions and only helps if you have an CRT or the EDDI data is wrong.

Further, I guess you must be doing something wrong because I installed the driver 177.82 on openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) from the NVIDIA*.run file and it does work.

BTW the kernel shipped with openSUSE 11.1 is 2.6.27.7

I have tried everything else and in more than one places, I noticed that people reported that installing driver without using yast helped them. I was also told the same thing. Full details on my problem which led me to install driver by re-compiling are available at:

Hm ... I'd agree that the openSUSE X11 configuration utility "sax2" really sucks *ahem
And I have some complaints about the precompiled drivers in the nVIDIA repo.

But as said before, you should look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The driver will log why it's choosing a resolution and why other resolutions weren't chosen. From the /etc/X11/xorg.conf you posted, I'd say it's either the IMHO silly UseModes entry in the Monitor section or the unnecessary long list of unavailable resolutions in the Screen section (it's a Laptop with 1280x800, right?).

Well, the Xorg log is new stuff for me as it is the first time I have had to dig this deep. See if you can pinpoint the source of problem in the attached log.
