Using mplayer with vdpau support I see sometimes a very blocky distorted image when playing h264 movies. I use mplayer-vdpau-3263604 on Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 on an Asus M3N78-EM which has a 8200 chipset and a 8300 GPU.
mplayer exited just now with: Error 2 at libvo/vo_vdpau.c:1055

This is my full mplayer output:

I'm quite happy with my setup and with the vdpau support: mplayer only uses 5% cpu, X around 1% with this 1080p movie. With the normal mplayer it uses > 70% and X around 25%, but then without any distortions...

If anyone needs more info, like a screenshot of the distortions, I'd be happy to send it.

I thought people might be interested to know my findings on power usage when using VDPAU.

Harry Potter 1080p H.264 movie trailer used. Total system power drain listed. Host CPU, X3110 (3ghz Core 2); GPU, Gigabyte 9800 GTX+ 1GB

Idle: 109 watts
VDPAU codec: 113 watts
Software codec: 117 watts
Full CPU load: 135 watts
Full CPU/GPU load: 197 watts

Woo hoo, a whole 4 watts are saved. These are averages of course, but the usage rarely dipped below or above these numbers during video playback.

P.S. Going from my old 7950 GT to this new 9800 GTX+ cost me 23 watts in increased power consumption at idle. Ugh. Aaron and friends, you need to stress power and heat to your engineers. It's getting out of control. Think Pentium 4. Your CEOs might find it funny to force consumers to use turbo hurricane fans on your cards (as seen in their own homemade video), but it's pretty pathetic.

Will VDPAU never work with video filters (mplayer -vf)? There are basic filters that are important to me (-vf crop, expand); "crop" allows me to get rid of the tiny black bars I get on my 1680x1050 display with 16:9 videos (much more annoying than the bigger black bars you get with 2.35:1 movies), and with "expand" I can take advantage of the size differences to place the picture higher and display subtitles below it.

Surely there's gotta be a way to only decode the stream with VDPAU, and leave the rest to MPlayer & X11?

It's perfectly possible to implement filters when using VDPAU decoding. All that needs to be done is perform a getbits after the decode operation to download the picture data to the CPU for filter application. the getbits operation will naturally suck a little time/bandwidth, but hopefully that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The only reason this isn't currently implemented in ffmpeg/MPlayer is because nobody has written it. Once the existing VPDAU patches get fully merged into ffmpeg/MPlayer SVN, hopefully people can start taking a look at adding new features like this.

Regarding cropping, it's possible to use the VdpVideoMixer to crop as it sends it to the display. As the mplayer vo already instantiates one it's not too much work to add a source rectangle, but the version I hacked together isn't (yet) ready to go as it only crops to a fixed size. If I get a chance to tidy it up I may post it.

I've also tried to tweak mplayer with VDPAU to enable deinterlacing but so far haven't had much success because I haven't got round to keeping the previous and next frames it needs.

Just removed the Composite extension from xorg.conf and it works fine now. Is there any way to get Composite and 180.22 to play nice with VDPAU?
