well yea...

practically all AMD/Intel chips have x64/EMT64.

will be interesting to see if software companies follow suit though. im sure a lot of their clients (companies) are still 32-bit and a 64-bit version of their product will eliminate backwards compatibility.

tough call for them.

I have a pt tech job at Staples and almost all the laptops/desktops we sell come with 64 bit now. Hasn't been that way for long though a little before the holidays is when the switch seemed to kick in.

I'm actually really surprised vista x64 hasn't overtaken vista x86. I guess it isn't far behind though, (x86 is about 3x as popular as x64).

i agree, W7 probably should be 64-bit only on the Ultimate package. but the home/business versions really need to keep a 32-bit version.

No way. EVERYTHING needs to be 64-bit by now. We need to light a fire under these devs butts and get them working harder on compatibility with this. What are business' going to do if they can't run there software? There only option would be to go to linux or OSX. That won't happen.

Microsoft needs to switch to 64-bit as well as end support for any 32-bit O/S. One people realize that 32bit (Xp, vista) is not being supported, they will be forced to switch.

64bit only?! No way, that means Dell will have to get off their lazy arses and make some 64bit drivers and software for their laptops.

I'm all about embracing 64 bit, but the business implications are HUGE.

I'm in the middle of it at work. Our special AutoCAD front end is not 64 bit compatible yet, but AutoCAD is. Our new collision detection software, Navisworks, is not 64 bit compatible either. Our drawings are growing to the point where we bounce of the 32bit 2gb limit every day. Setting /3gb in the boot.ini is the band-aid currently applied. This software package just cost us $40,000 dollars. That includes 4 machines and 9 seats of CAD. There are NO alternatives.

That's just our problem. I'm sure there are millions of machines out there looking to be replaced or put in place where there are millions of proprietary 32 bit applications in use. It's too simple for the gamer crowd to say that 32 bit needs to die when they don't have a clue what the professional world has to deal with.

Yeah, well I tried out IE 64-bit with the Win7 beta and it is useless as the needed plugins to use the net nowadays (Adobe, etc) don't even have 64-bit versions. If I can't even surf the net in 64-bit then the software community has a LONG way to go before we hit 64-bit only....
