I'm not saying it's a good solution, but if the problem is within the nvidia binary driver there is little you can do.
Well, if I look for support on the nvidia site it points to this forum. So hopefully this thread get the attention of some expert at nvidia who can tell us how to solve this problem or who can make sure that the next driver they release does provide working HDMI output.

Code:
I'm also using Ubuntu 8.10 and have minimal options in xorg.conf and saving xorg.conf works fine here. Try posting it and let's see if it can be worked out...
This is my xorg.conf at the moment, but as I told before: Fixing the problem that 173 gives doesn't really solve anything for me. There is no HDMI audio, so using windows when I want to watch a video works better for me until this problem in 177 is fixed.

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        Device "Configured Video Device"
        Option "PixmapCacheSize" "5000000"
        Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "0"
EndSection

I'm quite sure that PixmapCacheSize and AllowSHMPixmaps are supposed to go in the Device section and not in Screen.

I'm not quite sure how these got there, but I removed these lines and nvidia-settings still crashes. But once again, that is not the problem I'm trying to get fixed here. Being able to save to the xorg.conf file only has some use for me when using 173, but I prefer 177 even though I can't use HDMI so I won't be using the "Save to X Configuration File" button anyway.

Getting help on how to enable the HDMI output is what I'm really trying to do. But your help is appreciated anyway, thanks.

I am having the same issue with a HP 8710p notebook and BenQ FP202W monitor.

CRT cable works perfectly
Drivers 173 work perfectly
Drivers 177 with HDMI cable give me two devices (DFP-1 and DFP-2), neither of which send a signal to my monitor.

Any help/followups appreciated

Just tried with 180.06 and it still has the same exact behavior, a few days from now I'm getting a docking station so I get to find out if that works.

On the docking station 177.80 and 180.06 are unable to detect anything attached, with 173.14 the docking station DVI port however works well.

We reproduced the issue and filed bug 498724 for the team to investigate further.

bump this thread.

Is there any workaround for this issue. I have the HP 8510w (FX 570m) and trying to get hdmi out to my plasma, same issue as everybody else, no signal has been sent to the tv.

RolandH any progress made to the bug? has it been fixed in the latest release?

The only "workaround" I'm aware of is to use 173.x drivers.

I am experiencing the same.

Nothing has changed: Still no HDMI Video out as originally posted:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123440 in November 2008.

Quite laughable if it was not so bloody frustrating.

Quick, lets promote IGP 8200 and 8300 as perfect HTPC chipset.
uhmmmmm HDMI is broken, nevermind, nobody will notice that they paid money for something they cannot use! Just fob them off if they do!

Humbug
