I get a blank/null answer for BusRate. (but it knows it as a keyword b/c I don't get an error message) (as a sanity check I also did nvidia-settings -q gpus and I do get an answer for that)

EDIT: corrected text of sanity check question from BusRate to gpus (thanks apaige)

Typo in your post? What did the latter command say?

oops, good catch! (pre-Mountain Dew typing is bad)

My 2nd command was -q gpus

a) to -q BusRate, I got no answer
b) to -q gpus, I did get an answer (it said 8200)
c) to -q foo, I got an error message, essentially saying unknown question (which thus suggests BusRate was a known question, but had a null answer)

To summarize/correct.. I got NO answer to BusRate.

Hey nice to see that some guys are working on it.

I also tried an "nvidia-settings -q BusRate" and get a blank output like zim2dive.
Here is the Output from -q gpus:
#nvidia-settings -q gpus

1 GPU on BlackDragon:0

[0] BlackDragon:0[gpu:0] (GeForce 8300)

I'm using driver version 180.25 here.

Just for comparison: This is no general problem with nvidia-settings, on my 6200 it gives correct answer:

$ nvidia-settings -q BusRate

Attribute 'BusRate' (hostname:0.0): 8.
The valid values for 'BusRate' are in the range 1 - 8 (inclusive).
'BusRate' is a read-only attribute.
'BusRate' can use the following target types: X Screen, GPU.

Seems like you catched something.

A BusRate of null (on the 8200) would seem to correspond to the performance level

Did .27 include the fix for this?

EDIT: Nevermind, answer is 'no' :P

Was just going to ask that

Will we get a heads-up when a new release addresses the issue?

thanks,
Mike

For YouTube, disable compiz (desktop effects in Ubuntu), and that may at least allow you to play Youtube full screen (higher-def fullscreen will still be bad)

Right, so no "BusRate". Would love some insight into the problem, just to keep me calm while I compare the performance my Dell Latitude X1 (Pentium M @ 1.1 GHz, Intel 915 IGP) to the performance of my Asus X59GL (Core 2 Duo T5800 @ 2 GHz, nVidia 8200M G [10de:086f] IGP) on YouTube, and have the Dell win (the Dell can actually play fullscreen YouTube - although slightly jumpy, yet my Asus cannot - it feezes in its tracks and the CPU usage goes through the roof... unless I use driver 173, when all I get is some screen updating problems when scrolling ).

Both my laptops run Ubuntu 8.10, both at the same resolution of 1280x800.

Feels like a Lamborghini that just got overtaken by a Romanian Dacia car, and it has a really hard time keeping up.

Update: As I was writing my post, a few more posts showed up. I disabled the effects, logged out and back in, and full screen work. Regular playback still uses about "a lot" of my CPU, but when I go into full screen CPU usage drops to about the same level as windowed playback under 173. I find this spooky. Using 180.27 btw.
