It'd be nice if they [nVidia] would fix their strict-binding performance. Then you could run compiz for both screens and have no tearing.
Well, we're aware that tearing with the blit-based presentation queue is bad. It's certainly somewhere on the list of things we want to fix. Exactly if/when it happens isn't yet decided.

The strict-binding performance issue is completely unrelated to running compiz on 2 screens without tearing. Don't confuse the issues!

I wasn't. I'm not sure as to why the poster uses compiz on only one screen either. I just used the post as an opportunity to take a jab at my strict-binding woes.

Followup on my attempt to run a VC-1 video. The good news, it mostly worked. It played for a while, then crashed. It also managed to take out the USB bus, at least I think that's what happened, as the ext3 FS on my USB flash drive (the root fs) got corrupted! Booting the live CD allowed me to get fsck run on it and after that plus re-installing my kernel image all is well again.

The video was being played back from the flash drive, and everything else lives on the network. So I don't know if that factored in. If it's reproducible, it shouldn't be hard to pull off. Unfortunately, I can't provide any debug logs as my filesystem died. I think I'll hold off on VC-1 testing for a bit. If nothing else, I want to do it with a backup drive so I don't kill the playback system in the bedroom, the WAF gets low fast if I kill the TV. I need to put together a test box that I can break whenever I want to.

Asus M3N78-VM using onboard gfx
180.22 driver
Mythbuntu 8.10 with all the updates
2GB system RAM, 512 dedicated to the gfx
OCZ Rally2 8GB USB flash drive (boot/root fs)
playback with most recent mplayer+patch from nvidia

Hi. I just installed driver 180.25 (64 bits version to go with my Ubuntu 64) + that lovely latest patched mplayer on my system
(Asus P5N7A-VM with geforce3000 chipset + Intel dual core E5200)
Good news are cpu is indeed taking the backseat and lets the gpu do the job
Bad news are : it's not working more than some seconds (15 to 40...) regardless of the source (tried half a dozen 720p and one hdlite (1440*1080) tvsource, all h264)
needless to say the same mplayer without vdpau codec (-vc ) runs the same files without problem.

when it crashes, I often see that error on terminal
Error 2 at libvo/vo_vdpau.c:1052: 0.000 0/ 0 2% 0% 0.3% 4 0

sometimes I can't even check terminal error msgs as the crash just...hangs the system and I have to reset the computer...

If someone has an idea ...

Aargh. I have the same problem, compiling mplayer-vdpau-3402051 with a fully updated Fedora 10 x86_64 with 180.25 installed via rpmfusion.

If they are like the ATrpms package, the libraries and headers aren't located in a place where the compiler and runtime linker can find them..

Either move them, or create the appropriate links.

Can you give me an example of a header filename I can search for?

I think these are similarly wrong (current mplayer-vdpau-mplayer.patch) lines 1234 and 1356... granted most people's monitors are wider than high though!

PHP Code:
+          vdp_st = vdp_presentation_queue_display(
+
vdp_flip_queue,
+
outputSurface, // outputSurfaces[0 / 1],
+              FFMIN(max_width, FFMAX(outRect.x1, outRectVid.x1)),
+
FFMIN(max_width, FFMAX(outRect.y1, outRectVid.y1)),
+
0
+          );

Thanks! I got past my can't-find-vdpau.h compile error by (1) installing package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-devel and (2) modifying the generated config.mak to look like:
Code:
EXTRA_INC = -I/usr/include/nvidia -I.  -Ilibdvdread4 -Ilibdvdnav
Now I get
Code:
vdpauvideo.c:142: error: 'for' loop initial declaration used outside C99 mode
Is gcc-4.3.2 too new?

Are ypu sure?
I have two screens connected, one is 50Hz (projector) the other 60Hz (17" screen)
$ export DISPLAY=:0.0
$ glxgears
251 frames in 5.0 seconds = 50.022 FPS
$ export DISPLAY=:0.1
$ glxgears
303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.465 FPS

Seems sync to vblank is dependant on the screen used...

...more on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&postcount=652
: I added the extra debug feature as mentioned on some sticky
it still crashes...bun runs longer (about 1 mn) and not at the same line (950 or 990)
