Default Audio over HDMI, volume control?

Crazy question for all you people who have the audio working over HDMI (alsa 1.0.19, nvidia 180.22). Can you use alsamixer to control the volume? Basically, do your applications that use alsa volume control have the ability to set the volume on the audio?

I've got audio over hdmi working except I can not control the volume with the master or pcm volume controls. I can only mute it with the hdmi mute switch.
