It's nice to see (or maybe not that nice) that other people also experience the red checkerboard issue. I still have to work with the 177.82 driver, any 180.xx shows the same red checkerboard pattern once in a while, with some framed going completely red.

Player is mplayer with xv, no compiz.

I have a triple screen setup, and play the movies on the 2nd DVI output of the 8600 card, on the PCI 6200 card I never experienced it, but cannot play 720p material due to the low PCI throughput.

I have exactly the same issue, is there someone working on fixing that?

I just upgraded to KDE 4.2. Since it has compositing built in, I removed Compiz. Sure 'nough, the red checkerboard problem appears to have disappeared. If it shows up again, I'll post here... but I feel good

Mmmh, I am running on KDE 3.5 for now but am not using compiz. But still have that issue regardless.

With 180.27 still no success.
But: I wasn't able to get the checkerboard on the other Screen connected to my 8600., and not on the 6200 PCI card. I made a screenshot of the window and placed the mplayer window only partly in the faulty Display area:

I'm still curious about what causes the checkerboard to appear, It has nothing to do with scaling (as it appears also with unscaled video), but happens only sporadically. I don't know if this is when some vsync happens or whatever, playing a video again it doesn't happen on the same position.

... well, unless VDPAU doesn't work with xinerama, a change from my (working) 177.82 to the 180 series is not needed, hell, even compositing won't work b/c of the 6200 card:

(WW) NVIDIA(1): The GPU driving screen 1 is incompatible with the rest of the
(WW) NVIDIA(1): GPUs composing the desktop. OpenGL rendering will be
(WW) NVIDIA(1): disabled on screen 1.

well, this has nothing to do with the checkerboard.

I have the problem of full frame red flashes when playing video. It started when i upgraded to opensuse 11.1.
Has anyone noticed that there is a major improvement if one plays the file with mplayer from the command line?

Yes, this is precisely my problem, i get red flashes completely randomly when reading videos from mplayer. Haven't tried another player to be fair and still believe this is another nvidia driver regression since 178.x series is fine.

Same problem here. GeForce 8600. It occurs totally randomly. I'm not using compiz or any other sort of compositing.

I just installed 180.22 x86_64 on CentOS 5.2 and am now having this problem (red flash checkerboard with full-motion videos). I reverted to 177.82 and the problem went away. This is definitely a glitch in the 180.xx driver tree. What does the nVidia development team have to say? FWIW, I am using an 8800GT board w/ dual 24" WS displays. I got this using the Kaffeine video player playing a DVD and also playing a high-def mkv video file.

GTX 260 and an 8800GTS first gen. Have not seen this issue on Ubuntu 8.10, or Ubuntu 8.04 with KDE3. My guess however is that it has something to do with VDPAU:

The VDPAU support in the NVIDIA 180.06 beta release is still very
preliminary. We are aware of cases of visual corruption and in some
cases GPU hangs.
We will be working on these issues over the next
several NVIDIA driver releases.
Is there a way to disable this feature in the driver so that we could test this?

Those visual corruptions mentioned there are related to the VDPAU decoding ; a lot of videos weren't displayed properly...
nothing to do with the problem discussed in this thread.

i started having the full red frame issue when i upgraded earlier tonight, and i disabled all vertical syncing, it SEEMS to have fixed it but i honestly can't say for sure yet, will keep an eye on it.

this was on kde 4.1 with no compositing enabled (disabled explicitly in xorg.conf)
