I have the same versions except my firefox is 32 bit. FF crashes on launch with the glibc msg for me. Is this a bug that only affects 32 bit FF?

Ok, so who screw up the thing? Firefox? Nvidia? Or both?

I'd wager NVIDIA, considering it's an error in OpenGL and something new in the 180.xx drivers. They're being very quiet about the whole thing though.
It's making me question NVIDIA's support to the Linux platform. I've been quiet happy with my video card up till this point. If this is all we get not, I may not be reinvesting in NVIDIA hardware from now on.

Are you guys using Flash? There's a known bug in the way Flash loads OpenGL that causes it to interact badly with Firefox's memory management. Please try loading Firefox with LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1

Made no difference. I also tried:
- uninstalling all browser plugins
- upgrading to git builds of cairo and glitz
- changing from 32 bit Gentoo to 64 bit (I was already going to anyway)

The two workarounds I've seen others mention do work for me:
- recompile cairo with glitz disabled
- switch the libGL symlinks to point to xorg's instead of the nvidia driver's

Either one lets Firefox launch. Same result with FF 3.1 beta2 and a Jan 26th trunk snapshot.

AFAIK, the glitz cairo backend is *completly unsupported* by the cairo developers...

I have the same problem here
after testing mozilla-firefox-3.0.5 and mozilla-firefox-3.1_beta2 (the same problem) I downgraded to mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.19 and it's working OK.

I can add another application that makes this bug aŁppear with all 180* driver versions even the ltest 180.27.

When I start (the preview version of) bibble5 (a RAW photo converter) having the Nvidia 180 driver installed it does not start and tells me instead:
...
*** glibc detected *** ./bibblepro: free(): invalid pointer: 0x08d27f00 ***
======= Backtrace: =========
/lib/libc.so.6[0xb62c1654]
/lib/libc.so.6(cfree+0x9c)[0xb62c2f3c]
/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1[0xb52ffa60]
...

If I install the 177.82 series of driver this does not happen, but then I have other problems like bad rendered fonts that do not appear using the 180 version . I am running openSuSE 11.1 .

Same Issue here with songbird. I wish there would be sources available because my self compiled firefox doesnt crash.
Tested with Sabayon 4.0 and 180.29 drivers.
I guess easiest way to reproduce is download sabayon 4.0, layman -a sunrise, emerge songbird-bin. Just in case the nvidia devs want to reproduce.

Gentoo user here (32bit), same issue.

Have:
x11-libs/cairo 1.8.6-r1 (with glitz)
www-client/mozilla-firefox 3.0.6 (build from sources, binary firefox crashes too)
net-www/netscape-flash 10.0.15.3
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers 180.29

Recompiling cairo without glitz lets firefox start, but at times it makes it unusable (high cpu usage), plus full screen youtube videos crash firefox.

Thumbs up Re: *** glibc detected *** munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0xb7f1a470 ***

i've had the same problem with all 180.* drivers (gentoo 32bit), but the new 180.35 seems to resolve this. firefox-bin works fine now without the munmap_chunk crash.
although i can't be sure if the driver upgrade alone fixed it, because portage also updated 21 other packages that day (qt-core poppler texinfo dialog libXi randrproto libXfont pixman man-pages fontforge ruby qt-sql xf86-video-vesa raptor soprano poppler-bindings imagemagick xine-lib gst-plugins-faad vlc libquicktime).

if it is the driver, thanks for fixing it
