Default Printer Question

So I've got a HP Laserjet 1xxx printer connected via USB. And for some reason, each time that I reboot this workstation or unplug the printer (and plug it back up), the workstation acts like it's never seen the printer before and reinstalls it. It creates a new USB port (USB002, USB003) and of course you can see the "new" printer underneath Printers and Faxes.

The listed printers will look like this:

HP Laserjet 1xxx
HP Laserjet 1xxx (Copy 1)

Has anybody ever ran across this issue? I'm going back on-site tomorrow to this client and the only thing I know to try so far is to completely wipe out all printer drivers and reinstall it from the ground up. These workstations are pretty old (early P4 days) and I'd recommend that they get new stuff but . . . ya know how that goes. Thanks guys!

are the computers somehow resetting themselves? (like deepfreeze or such) Like something that undoes changes made to the system at each logon?

you can try another port or different drivers? but if not, maybe a repair install or reformat?

If you start plugging the printer into different USB ports that will happen. You need to make sure that it goes back into the same port everytime.

Like hokeyplyr48 said, maybe the port you're using is bad and it keeps reinstalling that port again which would make the printer want to reinstall as well.

If you just install the printer, unplug it and plug it back into that same port right away it should just change from being online, to offline, to online again. If it doesn't then something is messed up with that port because it thinks it's a different port everytime you plug the printer back in.

Here is what I figured out. If you have one of the "All in One" HPs with the software installed, there is a service installed called the "HP Cue Discovery Service" that you can disable. But now, I have a few that only have some basic drivers installed but no service. Hmm . . .

I've changed ports and tried to start from scratch . . . I haven't heard any other complaints just yet.
